  Byzantine Empire - Crystalinks
Totila was crushed and killed at Busta Gallorum; Totila's successor, Teias, was likewise defeated at the Battle of Mons Lactarius (central Italy, October 552).
The Persians were defeated and the territories were recovered by the emperor Heraclius in 627, but the unexpected appearance of the newly-converted and united Muslim Arabs took by surprise an empire exhausted by the titanic effort against Persia, and the southern provinces were all overrun.
Heraclius and the military governors of Syria were slow to respond to the new threat, and Byzantine Mesopotamia, Syria, Egypt, and the Exarchate of Africa were permanently incorporated into the Muslim Empire in the 7th century, a process which was completed with the fall of Carthage to the Caliphate in 698.

Battle of Mons Lactarius - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Battle of Mons Lactarius (also known as Battle of the Vesuvius) took place in 553 during the Gothic War waged on behalf of Justinian I against the Ostrogoths in Italy.
After the Battle of Taginae, in which the Ostrogoth king Totila was killed, the Byzantine general Narses captured Rome and besieged Cumae.
The absence of any real authority in Italy immediately after the battle led to an invasion by the Franks, but they too were defeated and the peninsula was, for a short time, reintegrated into the empire.

On his way fleeing to southern Italy, he gathered support from prominent figures within Totila armies including Scipuar, Gundulf (Indulf), Gibal and Ragnaris to make his last stand against the Byzantine eunuch general Narses at the Battle of Mons Lactarius, south of present-day Naples, in October 552 or early 553.
Gundulf and Ragnaris escaped from the field; the latter was mortally wounded after a failed assassination by an agent of Narses.

The eighth volume in the celebrated Great Battles of History series covers the era of the Justinian Reconquest of Rome—the greatest expansion Rome had undergone in its history, under a single ruler, other than Trajan or Augustus.
All of the major battles of those 25+ years are included, and the major enemies are covered, with beautiful period counters by Rodger MacGowan detailing them all.
The scenario, which uses the rules for War Galley, introduces players to the dromon, a type of galley that became the workhorse of the Mediterranean until the 2nd millennium.

Till the dawn of day, they halted in order of battle, apprehensive of treachery or ambush; but the troops of Bessas, with their leader, had already escaped; and when the king was pressed to disturb their retreat, he prudently replied, that no sight could be more grateful than that of a flying enemy.

Taginae, or more properly, the Battle of Busta Gallorum, heralded the end of the Gothic War in Italy.
Not only were the Ostrogoths outnumbered, but their infantry had suffered in recent years from a lack of proper training and equipment, a serious shortcoming that would cost them dearly in the forthcoming battle.
But the broken ground and narrow confines at Busta Gallorum were far from ideal for a massive cavalry attack.
