Cannington online - History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Cannington Hill is believed to be the site of a battle in AD 878 when the Saxons under King Odda defeated a force of Danish sea raiders who had landed at nearby Combwich.
Now known as the Child of Cannington her remains have been re-interred in the Parish Church where she is immortalised by a wooden statue.
The priory was very influential in the life of Cannington although records show that by the 14th century there was a degree of corruption and various inquiries revealed misuse of funds and illicit wanderings by the nuns.

Battle of Edington - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He then defeated the Vikings (or Danes) under Guthrum the Old, fighting behind a protective wall of shields, reminiscent of tactics used by the Roman legions.
The history of these attacks stretched back, according to the Laud Chronicle (Garmonsway 57), to the raid on Lindisfarne, in Northumbria, in 793 A.D. There were occasional raids on Wessex starting soon after Lindisfarne, but these were not a serious threat until the battle at Carhampton, in 836 (Yorke 151, Garmonsway 62-63).
But King Alfred of Wessex rebounded from this disaster and repulsed the attack at Edington, the battle that ended that particular Danish threat and kept Wessex English.

The Wilfrid Bog Issue: Letters and Responses
Failing to make this amendment in 1993, to secure all rare peat locations within Brock Township, is reflective of councils decision in 1992 not to uphold ANY Regional Bylaws due to our pressure for them to enforce the Regional Tree Conservation Bylaw on the property at that time.
Being such a short duration after a two and a half year battle (1990-1993) over the issue, it hardly seems possible that this amendment was forgotten.
It does not take a fool to realize the ramifications of this lack of action by our past council or the implications the 1993 Brock Council may have left themselves subjected to.
