Ship Modeling FAQ, Question 038 --- Revised: January 22, 2001
If there was no separate canton on an ensign, the jack being worn -- as measured in historic images -- was one-half the hoist and fly dimensions of the largest ensign currently worn, which resulted in the jack being one-fourth the square footage of the ensign.
Not only was the color of the ensign important but also the configuration of the canton (the union flag design in the ensign's upper left quadrant).
When ensigns and jacks were worn that were built proportional to one of the major dimensions of their own ship, the flag would not be lost in profile against any ship nor would the flags overpower the ship either visually or because of wind loading.

Although the memorial statue of the Battle of Morgarten stands in canton Zug, it was in fact in canton Schwyz that the Confederates defeated Duke Leopold of Austria.

Originally, the anniversary of the battle was a strict fasting day and not intended as a victory celebration but as a memorial day for the 14 Swiss soldiers who fell.

While allowing the ensign defaced with the Canadian badge to be used in addition to the plain one was certainly a step in the right direction, this was hardly the independent use of the flag that Canada wanted.
The badge it displayed for both the Blue and Red Ensigns was identical to the badge on the flag of the governor general, despite the fact that the badge, sought and approved for the Blue Ensign a year before, had been the quartered provincial arms unadorned by either wreath or crown.
