  About Cerro Gordo
The name was given to the town in 1855 in honor of the early citizens who fought and were wounded in the heroic battle at the mountain pass of Cerro Gordo, Mexico, in the Mexico War 1845-1848.
The Cerro Gordo volunteer fire department and community ambulance service provide the village and surrounding areas with fire protection and emergency service.
Cerro Gordo maintains its own school system with a closed campus policy for grades K through 12.

This major battle of the Mexican-American War was fought on April 17 and 18, 1847, north-west of Veracruz, and saw the United States army of 8,500, under the command of General Winfield Scott, defeat 12,000 Mexican defenders under General Antonio López de Santa Anna.
Some days earlier Winfield Scott had taken Veracruz, and the victory at Cerro Gordo, was followed by other successes at Contreras, Churubusco, Casa Mata, Molino del Rey, and Chapultepec.
