The naval Battle of Chesma took place on 5-7 July 1770 near and in Çeşme (Chesma) Bay, in the area between Asia Minor and the island of Chios, the site of a number of past naval battles between Turkey and Venice.
It was part of the Orlov Revolt of 1769, a precursor to the later Greek War of Independence (1821-29), and the first of a number of disastrous fleet battles for Turkey against Russia.
The battle of Chesma was fought on the same day as the land Battle of Larga.

Shortly after the battle the Russians decided to attack the enemy on the night of 26 June.
For the victory at Chesma several seamen were awarded the Order of Saint George, created by decree of Catherine II on 26 November 1769: Captains Klokachev and Khmetevsky, Lieutenant-Commander Perepechin (of the Grom) and Lieutenant Ilyin.
The battle for Patras and its capture was one of the most important Russian victories in the Mediterranean.

Samuil Karlovich Greig, as Russian historians refer to him, another Scots-born Russian admiral, was born at 36-40 High Street, Inverkeithing in 1735 and first served in the Royal Navy aboard the Albemarle.
He joined the Russian navy in 1763 and commanded a detachment of ships in Spiridov's squadron in the Battle of Chesma in 1770 during the Russo-Turkish war of 1768-1774.
After Chesma he concentrated on improving the fleet and in 1774 he was appointed Commander-In-Chief at Kronstadt with the rank of Grand Admiral and given an estate in Livonia.
