Coamo is the third oldest settlement of the island's post Columbian period (after San Juan in the north and San German in the west).
Coamo became officially a town in 1616, and given the title of "Villa" by Spanish Royal Decree in 1778.
Coamo boasts an elegant picturesque downtown plaza area, and is the home of a series of natural hot springs, Los Baños de Coamo, which has attracted visitors to its medicinal waters since even before the Spaniards landed.

The Battle of Abonito Pass, the last battle of the Puerto Rican Campaign of the Spanish-American War, was interrupted by news of the August 13 armistice before its outcome could be decided.
On August 12, United States Generals James H. Wilson and Oswald H. Earnst had deployed two brigades parallel to the Spanish defenses between Barranquitas and Cayey, chief of which were the guns at Abonito Pass.

This account of the surrender of Coamo was written by Richard Harding Davis, the most famous war correspondent of the war.
He must forget that the taking of Coamo has always been credited to Major-General James H. Wilson, who on that occasion commanded Captain Anderson's Battery, the Sixteenth Pennsylvania, Troop C of Brooklyn, and under General Ernst, the Second and Third Wisconsin Volunteers.
The Second Wisconsin approached Coamo along the main road from Ponce, the Third Wisconsin through fields of grass to the right of the road, until the two regiments met at the ford by which the Banos road crosses the Coamo River.

Peace was declared at this time and we, Co. B, had two days field rations and were in light marching orde, ready and all in the ranks to march to Aibonito Pass, where would have been probably one of the boodiest battles since the "Wilderness".
The road for nearly a mile and half was filled with mines to be exploded as we tried to force the pass.
There were no battle casualties, but ten men from the regiment died of disease during the conflict.

On August 9th, 1898 the troop was involved in battle on the highway to Coamo.
The troop was ordered to flank the Spanish position and cut off their retreat by seizing the baths at Coamo, but the Spanish had already fled and Troop C entered the town, joining up with the first crop infantry.
Troop C dismounted and formed a line of battle, sending the horses to rear and deploying sharpshooters and flankers to pick off any Spanish soldiers that showed themselves while developing the flanks of the enemy line.

Construction was also delayed at Bona Vista and Battle Harbor, due to the necessity for the U.S. Navy through the NLOL, to leap into the breach and without any forewarning try to supply the materials and supplies which were originally supposed to be supplied by the civilian contractors, the Canadian Navy or the Radiation Laboratory.

With the horrors of war as horrible as they are without any aid from these contrasts, their presence always seemed not only sinful but bad art; as unnecessary as turning a red light on the dying gladiator.
A barbed-wire fence, with a gateway, encircles the block-house, which has been converted into a home for the caretaker of the park, and then, skirting the road to Santiago to include the tree under which the surrender was arranged, stretches to the left of the block-house to protect a monument.
It is true that the great battles of the Civil War and those of the one in Manchuria, where the men killed and wounded in a day outnumber all those who fought on both sides at San Juan, make that battle read like a skirmish.

Two weeks later, Oct. 8th, the regiment was in the battle of Perryville and encountered disaster at the outset, being placed by somebody’s blunder in a position where it received the fire from both armies.
He remained in the field hospital with a wound in his right elbow several days and went later to the hospital at Lebanon, Ky. In the action at Perryville, 13 of his company were killed and the aggregate of the wounded brought the loss up to 30.
The wound in his arm had left it is such a condition that he was unable to perform the duty of a soldier and he was discharged Feb. 21, 1863.
