The battle was a succession of strokes in oblique order, initiated by the Portuguese cavalry brigade and Pakenham's 3rd division and continued by the British heavy Cavalry and the 4th, 5th and 6th divisions.
The tactical victory was flawed by the failure of Spanish troops to guard a crucial bridge at Alba de Tormes and persecution was inefective.
The battle established Wellington as an offensive general; "He manoeuvred like Frederick the Great, in oblique order", wrote general Foy, a celebrated French divisional commander and author of memoirs about the Peninsular War in which he stated the famous assertion "Portugal is nothing but Lisbon; anything else is landscape"

The Battle of Craonne was fought on March 7, 1814, and resulted in a French victory under Napoleon Bonaparte against Russians and Prussians under General Blücher.
Unfortunately, for the French, the coordination was poorly timed and Ney not only suffered heavy casualties but the Allies managed to extricate themselves from a sticky situation.
Craonne cost Blucher 5000 casualties, while Bonaparte lost some 5400.

 The Battle of Craonne - A Wargame Scenario
With the anniversary of this fascinating battle coming up, in fact now probably gone when you read this, I thought that it might be interesting to do a simple wargames scenario based on the engagement.
What makes Craonne different is that for once it is the perfect game for the standard club wargamer, because the French army consists almost entirely of units of the Imperial Guard, who we all know are the first units to be collected by the average gamer.
This is a small battle capable of being played by two player on an 8’ x 5’ table, which is coincidentally mine, in either 15mm or 25mm.

On 7 March 1914 a monument had been erected to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Craonne, which was to be Napoleon's last before being sent into exile on Elba.
Following the Great War a new monument was erected to connect the events and young soldiers of the two battles.
This commemorates the battle here on 7 March 1814 when Napoleon was fighting against the Russians and the Prussian General Blucher.

This is a celebration of the club, with four specially-designed and profusely-illustrated boardgames.
They feature, respectively, the Black Prince's campaigns (or 'war rides') in Aquitaine (1355 & 1356); the battle of Craonne (1814); British attempts to sink the Tirpitz in WW2, and the small unit combat on Pacific atolls that was observed by SLA Marshall.
The whole book and its game maps were most lavishly and effectively illustrated by Bernard Higton and his team, which sparked my long term interest in creating illustrated books.
