The battle was a major defeat for the English who lost 17 ships with some 8,000 casualties set against the 7 ships and 2,000 casualties suffered by the Dutch.
To the west, a separate battle was fought between the two rear divisions under Admirals Cornelis Tromp and Jeremy Smyth with the English Admiral rapidly gaining the upper hand.
Tromp was forced to withdraw to the shelter of the Dutch coast.

Georg Carl von Döbeln was born at Stora Torpa in the Swedish region of Skaraborg in 1758.
Having been wounded in his leg at the battle of Cuddalore (Goudelour) in India Döbeln refused to report himself wounded because he knew that the campaign would then be over for him, instead he showed great bravery in the fighting in India.
The battle of Cuddalore was the largest engagement between European forces in India to that date.

In 1790 he went out again to the East Indies in the Thames frigate, and on his return to England was appointed to the Castor frigate of 32 guns, which, in May 1794, had the ill luck to fall in with a division of the Brest fleet and be captured.
The Sanspareil was captured, and Troubridge, on his return in her to England, was appointed to the 74-gun ship Culloden, in which early in 1795 he went out to the Mediterranean, and was present in the unsatisfactory action off the Hyeres on 13 July.
On the evening of 1 Aug., when the squadron, on approaching the French, was drawing into line of battle, and Troubridge, who had been some distance astern, was pressing on to get into station, the Culloden struck heavily on the shoal which runs out from Aboukir Island, and there remained.

After the surrender of Cuddalore, Colonel Cathcart was sent home with the despatches, and for his gallant conduct was appointed quarter-master-general of the forces in India, 3d August 1783, and in 1784 had a sword of a hundred guineas value voted to him by the Court of Directors.
After the battle of Austerlitz he returned home with the army, in February 1806; and the same year, was appointed commander of the forces in Scotland.

The Battle of Cuddalore (20 June 1783) was another indecisive battle between a British fleet under Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Hughes and a smaller French fleet under the Bailli de Suffren at the end of the American War of Independence.

In the battle of Colachal, Capt Eustace De Lanoy, the Dutch Naval Forces Commander, was captured who was asked later to train the Travancore Army.
