Chapter VII: Dak To (November-December 1967)
The battle for Dak To during November and December 1967 was a disaster for the 1st North Vietnamese Army Division.
The 'battle for DAK TO' was not a designated operation in itself, but occurred within the boundaries of the 4th Infantry Division's Operation MACARTHUR.
Nevertheless, the size of the two opposing forces, the length and violence of the engagement and the overall significance of the battle have made the events that occurred in the vicinity of DAK TO from 2 October to 1 December the most important that have occurred in the Central Highlands since the 1954 Geneva Convention....

The Battle of Dak To was the last of a series of battles in and around the town of Dak To, Vietnam, taking place between November 3rd and 22nd, 1967.
Like the Battle of Khe Sanh taking place at about the same time, US firepower was so overwhelming that Dak To was a disaster for the NVA, with one NVA general referring to it as "a pointless waste of men and resources".
The first battle in the area had taken place as part of the Viet Minh's final attempts to eject French colonial forces from Vietnam.

In the earlier November 1967 battle of Dak To in the Central Highlands, 289 U.S. soldiers were killed in action and an estimated 1,644 NVA soldiers also perished, victims of the 170,000 rounds of artillery, the 2,100 tactical airstrikes and the 228 Boeing B-52 sorties that supported the operation.
