 Battle of Deorham
The Battle of Deorham occurred in 577 between the West Saxons and the Celts.
The battle is considered by some to be decisive since it drove a land wedge between the Celts of what is now (approximately) Wales and those occupying territory to the south-west, e.g.
However, passage through this area by Welsh-speaking individuals was not impossible: a genealogy of Welsh aristocrats notes that the descendants of kings who ruled in Powys founded a dynasty of rulers in the Glastonbury region in the eighth century.

Ceawlin of Wessex - Biography Source
This has been cited as supporting Gildas' claim that for over 40 years after the battle of Mons Badonicus the British lived in peace and were secure from major predations from the Anglo Saxon invaders.
Much has been made that with this battle the Cornish Celts were separated from the Welsh; in actual fact, the Celtic peoples living in those parts of Britain could still travel by land with little significant barrier between them for many more years.
Deorham has been identified as Dyrham, a village on the turnpike between Bath and Cirencester since at least the mid-19th century.

Archeological explorations have indicated that Anglo-Saxon kingdoms were established in Kent, Sussex, Middlesex, and Essex in the latter part of the 5th century, as well as East Anglia, Lindsey (now Lincolnshire), Deira (now East Yorkshire) and the Isle of Wight.
Organised British resistance, first led by Ambrosius Aurelianus (according to Gildas), and then possibly by King Arthur, culminated in the Battle of Mons Badonicus.
