The Battle of Dong Xoai was an early battle of the Vietnam War.
Dong Xoai was manned by US-trained South Vietnamese special forces and militiamen, those troops were reinforced with two more battalions following VC attacks in Phuoc Binh and Song Be.
With a strong defence system the ARVN were confident that their base could withstand a Viet Cong attack, but they were wrong.

A Special Forces camp was established at Dong Xoai, a district capital in Phuoc Long Province, in late May 1965.
Dong Xoai lay astride a Viet Cong supply route from Cambodia into War Zone D. At about 11 PM on the night of 9 June, the SVN forces around Dong Xoai were attacked by the 762nd and 763rd VC Regiments.

Updated by the P.O.W. SYNOPSIS: On May 25, 1965, Special Forces Detachment A-342 was airlanded at Dong Xoai, a district capital of Phuoc Long Province, through which the Viet Cong supply lifeline from Cambodia into War Zone D tracked.
In late 1965, a Viet Cong produced film was captured which appeared to depict a portion of the battle at Dong Xoai.
One report associated with the capture of an American at the battle of Binh Gia was placed in Captain Johnson's file, but may have correlated to the capture of another Captain several months earlier.

Beginning at 2330 hours, the Dong Xoai Special Forces Camp was heavily mortared followed by an overwhelming ground assault.
In late 1965, US forces captured a VC produced propaganda film entitled "Dong Xoai in Flames." Portions of it depicted the battle of Dong Xoai and showed the dead bodies of 5 or 6 Americans including SFC Owens and 1st Lt. Hall.
One of these reports, which documented the capture of an American at the battle of Binh Gia, was placed in Capt. Johnson's file, but may have actually correlated to the capture of another Captain several months earlier.

The battle for Dong Xoai ended temporarily on Friday when the routed Viet-Cong left district headquarters in ruins, with the dead including some 150 civilian men, women and children.
Another present was 1st Lt. Charles Williams of Vance, S. C., who was awarded the Medal of Honor the nations highest military decoration for heroism for the same action in which Shields lost his life.
Johnson said Shields, by his heroism in a 14-hour battle at Dong Xoai on June 10, 1965, saved the lives of many of his comrades.
