The Battle of El Guettar was a World War II battle that took place during the larger Battle of Tunisia, fought between the Deutsches Afrika Korps under Juergen von Arnim and the Americans under George Patton in south-central Tunisia.
It was the first battle in which US forces were able to defeat the experienced German tank units, but the followup to the battle was inconclusive.
American forces first met the Deutsches Afrika Korps (DAK) in early March, and were badly mauled in a series of battles that culminated in the disasterous Battle of the Kasserine Pass in late February.

The first American units committed to battle suffered hundreds of casualties in the early hours of landings at Oran and Algiers, facing French units - who weren't sure whether Vichy or its opponents were commanding them - were unsure of whether to welcome the Allies or drive them back into the sea.
It was, perhaps, along with a later battle at El Guettar the bloody nose they needed to finally begin hating their enemy, as several historians later noted.

I was with this unit until after the battle of El Guettar at which time I was transferred to "E" company as company exec.
We landed in France at Utah beach on "D" plus four and, since we were combat tested as a result of North Africa and Sicily, we were sent to the front lines as the lead troops to cut the Cherburg penisula, which we did in a very short time.
The area of the last battle in "Private Ryan" is just about in the area we were in and, if "Ryan" were a totally true story, our battalion could have been the one that relieved Capt. Miller's group at the end of the movie.
