  HistWar: Les Gognards Battle History
Keeping on moving forward, in battle formation and let the enemy think that the 5,000 soldiers are just the advanced guard of the army.
The enemy, in battle formation, would progress towards the town or village and attack the skirmishers, who would commence a galling fire on them, all the while moving back and drawing the enemy towards the strong point...
The enemy, preoccupied with the battle for the strongpoint, fail to notice the French reserves who move from their concealed positions to envelop the attackers and attack them from the rear.

Ney's opportunities had come during the revolution as he fought early battles in 1792 at Valmy and Jemappes and on to a major battle at Hohenlinden in 1800 when he was a 31 year old general of a division.
Willing to hurl himself into battle at critical moments to inspire his troops by personal example, he was unwilling to accept higher rank, protesting each time his name was put forth to his military and political superiors.
In May 1801, (probably because of his lack of political ambition and, therefore, he was not a threat to anyone), Ney was summoned to be presented to the First Consul at the Tuileries, where Napoleon and Josephine had surrounded themselves with the ceremony and splendor of a court.

But this was not and could not be done, for during the whole battle Napoleon was so far away that, as appeared later, he could not know the course of the battle and not one of his orders during the fight could be executed.
To the question of what causes historic events another answer presents itself, namely, that the course of human events is predetermined from on high--depends on the coincidence of the wills of all who take part in the events, and that a Napoleon's influence on the course of these events is purely external and fictitious.
The French soldiers went to kill and be killed at the battle of Borodino not because of Napoleon's orders but by their own volition.

All the set pieces of the battle are lovingly recreated; the assault on the Hougoumount, the charge of the Scots Greys, the forming of the British army into squares, the final stand of the Old Guard.
The battle scenes are exceptional (although perhaps not quite bloody enough to give an accurate depiction of the horror and carnage of warfare at that time).
One or two minor inaccuracies aside, the film is extremely faithful, especially in terms of the battle itself and the military strategy involved.
