More than 5000 British had died during the cruel march and while discipline had been strained to breaking point, the need to hold the French off while the troops were evacuated by ship to England brought the professionalism back.
Led by Sir John Moore, the redcoats formed a series of defensive lines with the key position being the small village of Elvina.
The battle for the village was ferocious and it took several hours for the British to drive off the attackers.

Corunna was a victory for Britain, and the fact that Moore died during the battle, opened the way for the return of Wellington as commander.
During the battle Wellington adopted his favoured tactic of hiding his true strength from the enemy and used the concentrated firepower of cannons and muskets.

The battle of Fuentes de Onoro and especially at Talavera were near disasters.
According to British admirer of Wellington Jac Weller the Battle of Busaco was "a technical defeat although claimed as victory" and the allignement of troops at Talavera was not very well thought.
Of all the bigger battles only Salamanca was the only one where Wellington not deliberately set out to fight "at that place and at that time." Majority of the sieges were failures for Wellington.

In 1589 an English fleet commanded by Sir Francis Drake appeared in the bay and attacked the town; the attack was beaten off thanks to the courage of a local heroine named María Pita, but the town suffered much destruction.
During the Napoleonic wars, in 1809, a British and Spanish army under the command of Sir John Moore was defeated in a battle at Elviña, just outside the town, in which Moore was killed.
During the fight for a liberal constitution at the beginning of the 19th Century La Coruña was always on the side of the liberal forces.
