The Battle of Empress Augusta Bay was a land and naval battle in the Pacific campaign of World War II fought on the night of 1-2 November, 1943 on Bougainville, an island in the Solomon Islands group, but part of the Territory of New Guinea.
The battle was part of a broader Allied strategy aimed at isolating and surrounding the major Japanese base at Rabaul.
The bay had been chosen because it was at the outer limit of Allied fighter plane range and the numerically-superior Japanese 17th Area Army was concentrated at other, more strategic sites.

Following the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal the Japanese command doubted their ability to retake the island and began to look at New Georgia, to the north of Guadalcanal, as a base from which they could thwart the American advance in the Solomons.

Fortunately for them the Battle of the Coral Sea and Guadalcanal burst on the scene before the Japanese could build up their forces in New Guinea, otherwise they would have taken Port Moresby by storm.
The battle for Guadalcanal still rages, and won't finish until the last Japanese soldier is withdrawn on 8th February, 1943.
The main issue of this strategy though is that the US Navy would still have had to win major naval battles over the Japanese, which would not have been so easy as the Japanese Navy would have been in a stronger situation.

In terms of warship types and numbers, both for Omori's divisions as well as the approaching US force, the imminent Battle of Empress Augusta Bay compared fairly similarly to the opposing forces of the Java Sea battle in the previous year.
The losses to the attacking aircraft were heavy, with at least eight B-25's and nine P-38 fighters lost to AA fire and intercepting fighters, and Hara claimed that Shigure had accounted for five of the attacking aircraft.
Rear Admiral Omori, meanwhile, reported the earlier Empress Augusta Bay action as a victory, in the belief that his divisions inflicted more damage on the USN than what his had suffered.
