The ancient fort of Faughart consists of an artificial mount 60 feet high, surrounded by a deep trench with a counterscarp; the whole area of the summit is circumscribed by the foundations of an octagonal building, but whether a tower or only a parapet is uncertain.
The principal gentlemen's seats are Faughart House, the residence of Neale McNeale, Esq., pleasantly situated in a well-planted demesne; Fort Hill, of the Rev. G.
In the R.C. divisions this is the head of the union or district of Faughart and Jonesborough, comprising those parishes and part of Ballymascanlon, and containing two chapels, one in this parish and one in Jonesborough; the former is on the townland of Kilcurry.

Because of the prominence of cattle raiding in Irish warfare, battles most often occurred either when a raiding force was intercepted before it could escape with the plundered herds, or a fleeing populace was caught short of its mountain and forest hideaways.
Indeed, during the period in question, their ability to succeed in open battle increased considerably as a consequence of the introduction of better-armed troops and the development of new military institutions.
The flaw with this logic is that the Battle of Dysert O'Dea was essentially a civil war between rival branches of the O'Brien clan - with a small Anglo-Norman force intervening on one side.

Faughart is said to be the birthplace of Brigid, daughter of the chieftain, Dubtach, and the slave girl, Brocseach.
Some sources claim that Brigid was born in Kildare and that both of her parents came from noble Christian Leinster families.
The gravestones date mainly from the 18th and 19th century, but there is also the grave of Edward Bruce, who was killed at the Battle of Faughart on October 14 1318.
