Fish Creek, Saskatchewan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is most famous as the site of the Battle of Fish Creek during the Northwest Rebellion of 1885 between General Frederick Middleton of the Canadian Militia and Gabriel Dumont, adjutant general of the Metis provisional government of Saskatchewan.
Fish Creek was the southern border of the Southbranch Settlement of French Metis who settled in the Saskatchewan Valley region in the mid to late 19th Century.
The battle proved to be a success for the Metis forces in that bloodied Middelton's nose and stalled the Canadian advance on Batoche, Saskatchewan; capital of Louis Riel's provisional government, for another two weeks.

 Battle Creek Fish - Introduction
Battle Creek has been regarded as a uniquely important salmon-producing watershed because of the large numbers of chinook salmon that used to be produced there and because of the diversity of the four races of chinook that inhabit Battle Creek.
Early fisheries investigators claimed that Battle Creek was the most important salmon-producing tributary to the Sacramento River when its ecosystem had its original forma and function (Rutter 1904; CDFG 1993c).
CDFG (1993c) suggested that restoration of Battle Creek would provide a unique opportunity to restore a drought-resistant population of winter-run chinook salmon as a safe-guard against possible extinction of the primary population of this race located in the upper Sacramento River.

Coleman National Fish Hatchery was constructed on Battle Creek (a tributary of the Sacramento River) to partially mitigate for this habitat loss.
A: Eight months of the year, fish are blocked at the barrier weir in Battle Creek to congregate them for broodstock collection, to reduce the disease risk to juvenile fish at the hatchery, and to avoid large numbers of fall chinook salmon accessing areas where natural spring chinook salmon may spawn.

Given the small size of the remaining runs of wild fish, the take of even a few wild fish may have a significant effect on their populations.
The removal of older fish also eliminates much of the natural "cushion" the populations have against natural disasters such as severe drought, which may wipe out a run in one year.
Interbreeding of hatchery fish with wild fish has the potential to dilute and eventually eliminate the genetic distinctiveness of the remaining naturally reproducing stock.

Battle Creek comprises two main branches, North Fork Battle Creek (approximately 29.5 miles from the headwaters to the confluence) and South Fork Battle Creek (approximately 28 miles from the headwaters to the confluence), and the Mainstem reach (approximately 15.2 miles from confluence of the north and south forks to the Sacramento River).
The creek and its tributaries drain the volcanic slopes of Mount Lassen at the upper center of the watershed.
Because the main objective of the present project is to predict temperature characteristics for upper Battle Creek in the North Fork and the South Fork river channels, the larger discrepancy predicted in the Mainstem is not a major concern.
