  Fleurus - LoveToKnow 1911
FLEURUS, a village of Belgium, in the province of Hennegau, 5 m.
The first of these was fought on August 19/29, 1622, between the forces of Count Mansfeld and Christian of Brunswick and the Spaniards under Cordovas, the latter being defeated.
The second battle was fought on the 1st of July 16go between 45, 000 French under Francois-Henri de Montgomery-Bouteville, duke of Luxemburg, and 37,000 allied Dutch, Spaniards and Imperialists under George Frederick, prince of Waldeck.

 Thirty Years' War
The election of the Catholic zealot Ferdinand, Archduke of Styria, as King of Bohemia caused the Bohemian Protestants to fear for their religious freedom, and in May 1618, at Hradcany castle, two Catholic councillors (Martinitz[?] and Slavata[?]) were thrown from the castle windows.
The Battle of White Mountain, near Prague in 1620 was a serious blow to Protestant ambitions in the region.
In 1632 Gustavus Adolphus dies at the Battle of Lützen (although the Swedes win the battle), and in 1634 the Swedes are defeated at the battle of Nordlingen, but they continue to fight in the war until the end in 1648.

The Battle of Stadtlohn was fought on August 6, 1623 between Catholic and Protestant forces during the Thirty Years' War.
A year after his victory at the Battle of Fleurus and the relief of Bergen op Zoom, Christian of Brunswick found himself in command of an army of 15,000, freshly recruited and rested from winter quarters in the United Provinces.
This was the last major battle and campaign that Christian of Brunswick would undertake and participate in.

Christian's major success was at Fleurus, where his actions directly led to the relieving of the Protestant stronghold of Bergen op Zoom.
Christian's military actions began in 1622 when Ernst von Mansfeld began organizing his forces and expressed interest in linking up with his army, especially after his ally Georg Friedrich, Margrave of Baden-Durlach, was crushingly defeated at the Battle of Wimpfen.
They were caught at the Battle of Höchst, June 22, 1622, and although Christian was arguably defeated, he was able to escape with much of his army despite crossing a river under heavy fire and losing all of his baggage.

 Battle of Fleurus, 29 August 1622
Ernst von Mansfeld and Christian of Brunswick, marching to relieve the siege of Bergen op Zoom, found their march blocked at Lutter by the Imperial army of Gonzalez de Cordoba.
The battle was won by Christian of Brunswick, who after five charges was able to break through the imperial lines, allowing the rest of the army to march on towards Bergen, which they reached just in time to save the fort.
Despite its age (first published in 1938), this is still one of the best english language narratives of this most complex of wars, tracing the intricate dance of diplomacy and combat that involved all of Europe in the fate of Germany.
