 The Battle of Lauffeldt 1747
The British regiments present at the battle were: the Royal Scots Greys (2nd), 4th, 6th, 7th and the Duke of Cumberland’s dragoons; 1st and 3rd Foot Guards, Howard’s Old Buffs (3rd), Barrel’s (4th), 13th, Howard’s (19th), Campbell’s Royal Scots Fusiliers (21st), Royal Welch Fusiliers (23rd), Sempill’s (25th), 32nd, 33rd, 36th, 37th and Conway’s (48th) Foot.
Ligonier urged that they should be fortified and held by the infantry while Cumberland directed that the line of foot should be positioned behind them in open country.
It is said that Cumberland was bitterly jealous of Ligonier’s courage and decisiveness in the battle.

Fort Necessity is the site of George Washington's first battle, which was the opening of the French and Indian War in 1754.
Fort Ligonier, another French and Indian War facility, came under attack by the French and Indians in 1758, but the fort was successfully defended in a battle that ultimately was a key to this war, known also as the War for Empire.
Fort Ligonier is nearing completion of a $3 million reconstruction of the outer garrisons, reconstruction of all the other key buildings such as the hospital, and reconstruction of most of the artillery that was at the fort.

Dinwiddie then sent a small force to build a fort at the forks of the Ohio River, where Pittsburgh is now situated, but the French drove off the Virginians and built Fort Duquesne.
Some historians felt that the fort was diamond shaped while others, based on an 1816 survey that it was shaped like an obtuse triangle with a semi-hexagonal bulge projecting from the long side of the triangle.
Two anniversaries are approaching in the next three years: the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Fort Necessity and the 50th anniversary of Harrington’s excavations of the site.

Called the "Fort at Loyalhanna" until mid-November when it first appears in Col. Bouquet's accounts as Fort Ligonier, the stockade has an inner wall which surrounds two main storehouses, outer walls with ravelin, abatis, fascine walls, entrenchments, a formidable stockade, although small, and defended by several cannon and coehorns (mortars).

Located along the Mississippi in present-day southwestern Illinois was Fort de Chartres, the French headquarters in the Illinois country.
At Fort Massac, Fraser sent the sergeant, an Indian, the interpreter, and six soldiers with the batteaux down the river towards Chartres, while he and the rest of the party continued on towards Fort Chartres overland.
