The Battle of Fort Donelson was fought February 12–16, 1862 in the (Civil war in the United States between the North and the South; 1861-1865) American Civil War.
The battle of Fort Donelson took place shortly after the battle of Fort Henry, Tennessee, also a Union victory under then-brigadier general Grant.
They could defend Fort Donelson, after which, if successful, they could retake the poorly constructed Fort Henry, or they could abandon (A state in east central United States; a border state during the American Civil War; famous for breeding race horses) Kentucky to defend the important factories and depots at Nashville.

He first distinguished himself in battle at the Battle of Fort Donelson in February 1862, when he led a breakout from a siege by the Union army.
Forrest served with the main army at the Battle of Chickamauga (18 September - 20 September 1863), where he pursued the retreating Union army and took hundreds of prisoners.
In December, he fought alongside the Confederate Army of Tennessee in the disastrous campaign that ended in the Battle of Nashville (15 December - 16 December 1864), distinguishing himself by commanding the Confederate rearguard in a series of actions that allowed what was left of the army to escape.

 The Battle of Fort Pillow
In April, the Union garrison at Fort Pillow, a Confederate-built earthwork fortification and a Union-built inner redoubt, overlooking the Mississippi River about 40 river miles above Memphis, comprised 295 white troops of the 13th Tennessee Cavalry and 265 fls troops of the 11th U.S. Colored Troops, all under the command of Maj. Lionel F. Booth.
The garrison was unable to depress its artillery enough to cover the approaches to the fort Confederate sharpshooters, on the surrounding knolls, began firing into the fort killing Booth.
The "Fort Pillow Massacre" became a Union rallying cry and cemented resolve to see the war through to its conclusion.
