The battle was fought between a Roman Republic army, led by proconsul Julius Caesar, and Gallic forces led by Vercingetorix.
Intending to completely encircle Gergovia and starve the Gauls inside, Caesar was interrupted by trouble with his Gallic allies the Aedui whom he combatted and defeated.
Gergovia was the chief town of the Arverni, and was situated on a hill in Auvergne, about eight miles from the Puy de Dome.

If I had to face him in open battle, I would conduct itjust like the battle of Cannae and surround his forces and destroy them with my more numerable forces (being if I were in Vercigetorix's place).

Part of what gripes me is that the "John Wayne" ending cut off the second half of the battle of the Ia Drang.
Despite the editorial and manipulative sentimentality and a few 'liberties' with the facts, I have to say that 'Saving Private Ryan' was an awesome depiction of that theatre during world war II, the uniforms, the vehicles and set were all first rate, Stevie makes a good flick.
Another great war scene was the opening Stalingrad battle in "Enemy at the Gates." Pretty good portrayal of the Soviet point of view.
