The Battle of Groton Heights was a battle of the American Revolutionary War.
By 1781, the largest military structure on the New London side of the river was Fort Trumbull, which was still unfinished and vulnerable to attack.
East of the river on Groton Heights, Fort Griswold commanded the harbor and the surrounding territory.

Across the Thames River in Groton on top of a high hill overlooking the harbor stood Fort Griswold, which about 800 veteran British troops under Colonel Edmund Eyre set out to capture.
Years later, in 1793, those who had their homes burned were finally compensated by grants of land in a part of the Western Reserve, appropriately named the Firelands.

They were both freed slaves who risked their lives to fight against the Britsh in one of the last Revolutionary War Battles.

The Battle of Groton Heights and The Burning of New London -- September 6, 1781
The Raid on New London and Groton Heights had been planned over a period of time,  and hastened by the capture of the HMS Hanna one of Sir Henry Clinton's prize supply ships by the New London Privateer Minerva in the summer of 1781.
The plan hatched by Clinton set forth one of his favorite manners of waging warfare which was to conduct a lightning raid on a seaport with torch in hand.

In the action—a bloody one in which the sailors and marines of the naval landing force charged on the run into withering Confederate gunfire and suffered accordingly grievous casualties in the frontal assault—Fort Fisher was finally taken on 15 January.
During the battle, Yantic lost three men—two on 15 January and one, who had been wounded mortally on the 15th, who died on the 20th.
In October 1881, Yantic also took part in observances commemorating the centennial of the Battle of Groton Heights and in festivities celebrating the centennial of the American victory at Yorktown, Va.

Roberts' was one of the first novelists to give credible exposure to the Battle of Valcor Island which, although a loss for the Americans, slowed the British advance down Lake Champlain to connect with the Hudson enough so that they had to return to Canada for the winter of 1776.
It traces the escape of the American Army, under the command of Benedict Arnold, down Lake Champlain to the southern end of the lake to construct a small fleet of vessels to meet and oppose the British fleet on the northern end of the lake.
Although the Battle of Valcour Island was considered a loss to the American forces its outcome was significant enough to delay the British advance down the lake and was a major reason for the ultimate victory at Saratoga a year later.

After the battle on the heights, the story goes that some of the wounded soldiers were put in a wagon by the British and rolled down the hill.
Occupants of the house brought the soldiers in and tended to their wounds; there is a sign on the house to this affect.
