J.E.B. Stuart’s cavalry, which was riding north to get around the Union army, attacked a Union cavalry regiment, driving it through the streets of Hanover.
Farnsworth’s brigade arrived and counterattacked, routing the Confederate vanguard and nearly capturing Stuart himself.
Stuart was forced to continue north and east to get around the Union cavalry, further delaying his attempt to rejoin Lee’s army which was then concentrating at Cashtown Gap west of Gettysburg.

It was hot and sultry and the lines of battle were quiet with the exception of an occasional exchange of shots between pickets or sharpshooters.
The Confederates maintained a clam-like silence on all matters concerning the battle, hence we did not know the significance of this tremendous cannonading until after the battle was over… But for the present it sent everyone to the cellars as a matter of protection.

Used as a hospital during the Battle of Hanover, it was later converted into an auxiliary classroom between 1885 and 1904.
One of their objectives was to burn the bridges around Hanover Junction to disrupt transportation and telegraph contact between Harrisburg and Washington, D.C. The bridges were burned and the telegraph line cut between the 26th and 29th of June.
He stopped at Hanover and delivered a short address at the train station which is located several 100 yards south of the Eichelberger Building.

On May 27, 1862, Branch's Brigade participated in the Battle of Hanover Court House.(2) After the battle, the brigade was assigned to General A. Hill's Division in the Army of Northern Virginia.
After the Federals withdrew to pursue General Lee, General Hill's Corps marched to join him, arriving in time to initiate the Battle of Gettysburg on the morning of July 1, 1863.(11) During the second day of the battle, Hill's Corps, occupying the center of the Confederate line, was relatively quiet.
The regiment was involved in the Battle of Bristoe Station October 14, 1863, and during the Mine Run Campaign of November and December.

On May 27, elements of Brigadier General Fitz John Porter's V Corps extended north to protect the right flank of Major General George B. McClellan's Union Army of the Potomac that now straddled the Chickahominy River.
Confederate forces, attempting to prevent this maneuver, were defeated just south of Hanover Courthouse after a stiff fight.
