Ia Drang was a response to the nearly successful October, 1965 attack on Plei Me, which was thwarted when the U.S. unexpectedly brought in U.S. troops as reinforcements.
Tactically and strategically, this battle was a disaster, for though both sides ultimately claimed victory -- the North Vietnamese Army with a casualty rate of at least 10:1 -- the NVA lost their fear of the helicopter and developed the techniques to defeat it at the moment of its introduction.

In the Pleime Battle, the main forces of the relief column were made up by the 3rd ARVN Armored Cavalry Squadron with US air support and artillery support provided by the US 1st Cavalry.
In this trilogy, the Pleime Battle was the main and principal battle, with the Ia Drang and Duc Co as the two secondary aftermaths intended as moppep-up campaigns.
In light of this trilogy, the outcomes of the battle were more positive when the ground forces were made of ARVN units with fire powers support lend by US units, and were more negative when the ground forces were made up of solely of US units.

The Truth on Pleime Battle (m)
And the Pleime Battle was the last effort of a series of consecutive attacks launched by the Viet Cong since the beginning of 1965 in II Corps.
It is worthwhile to point out that unlike the battle of Duc Co that had occurred two months earlier, II Corps Command did not have to use the two seasoned reserved forces of airborne and marine corps, and had merely use an infantry battalion along with two ranger battalions and the 3rd Armored Squadron.
What happened at the Ia Drang Valley was not pre-planned by either side: the Viet Cong did not antiticipate that the American troops had the capacity to pile in so swiftly their units onto the battlefield; and the American was caught by surprise in stepping inadvertently on a huge ants colony.
