The Battle of Ilipa was arguably Scipio Africanus’s most brilliant victory in his military career during the Second Punic War.
After the Battle of Baecula and Hasdrubal Barca's departure, further Carthaginian reinforcements were landed in Spain in early 207 BC under Hanno, who soon joined Mago Barca.
After the battle, Hasdrubal Gisco departed for Africa to visit the powerful Numidian king Syphax, in whose court he was met by Scipio, who was also courting the favor of the Numidians.

The Battle of Ilipa in 206 BC was in my opinon Scipio's masterpiece.
What is worth pointing out is that Scipio's battle order not only outwitted his opponent Hasdrubal, but also helped contain any potential trouble by the Spanish allies.
The Battle of Ilipa essentially decided which one of the two great powers would dominate Spain.

In the battle of Zama (202) (near modern-day Maktar, Tunisia) Massinissa commanded the cavalry (6,000 Numdian and 3,000 Roman) on Scipio's right wing, Scipio having delayed the engagement for long enough to allow for Masinissa to join him.

Battles like Carrhae were rather a exception than a rule (it was ambush anyway) and the Romans almost conquered the Parthian Empire.
in all but the most trivial battles the romans fortified their positions with masive ditches, banks and bulwarks to the most elaberate standard.
regards the topic at large..I have an example of the overlooked masterpeice of the battle of Ilipa, which I think displays in a nutshell what gave the romans the ability to out fight and win against armies of antiquity from every region of the known western world..
