The Battle of Irish Bend, also known as Nierson's Wood or Franklin, was fought between Union Major General Nathaniel Prentice Banks against Confederate Major General Richard Taylor during Banks's operations against the Bayou Teche region in southern Louisiana.
The battle occurred two days after the Battle of Fort Bisland.
On the morning of April 13, 1863, Grover's division landed in the vicinity of Franklin and scattered Confederate troops attempting to stop them from disembarking.

The Battle of Vermillion Bayou was fought on April 17, 1863, the third battle in a series of running battles between Union Major General Nathaniel Prentice Banks and Confederate Major General Richard Taylor.
The battle was fought after both the Battle of Fort Bisland and the Battle of Irish Bend.
Though Taylor had not dealt Banks a defeat, he was continually slowing Banks down from reaching Alexandria, Louisiana, and his ultimate objective of Port Hudson, Louisiana.

At a later battle at Malvern Hill, July 1, 1862, the men not only suffered from enemy fire, but from rear fire from their own gunboats which killed four men of Company F. Endless artillery battles took place at the Siege of Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia.
With the buoyancy of the Irish character, the men were hopeful; and during these severe months sent home to their families not less than twenty thousand dollars collectively, almost their entire pay.
After this battle the brigade commander said in his report: "The nine-months troops have demonstrated by their gallant conduct that they can be relied upon in any emergency".

About seven o'clock A.M. the advance reached the edge of a dense line of woods, near what is known as Irish Bend (a sharp bend of the Teche), about eleven miles distant from the rebel earth-works, where General Banks was engaging the enemy.
The rebel prisoners represent that they had upward of five thousand men engaged in this affair, and that they came up with the intention of driving General Grover's division across the Bayou Teche before General Banks's force could arrive; but they were signally repulsed, with a loss of from three to four hundred.
On the field of battle one hundred and five prisoners were taken, and thirty wounded.

Passing Irish Bend the site of the civil war "Battle of Irish Bend" we came to the American Legion Post 64 where we took another 30 minute break.
This post is a landmark for travel down steam for me now because it marks the point from Jeanerette where you would come after traveling for two hours at 15 miles per hour.
I was uneventfully coursing along the bayou after passing a railroad bridge, click here to see video capture, when after a slight bend in the stream past which I could not see I suddenly found myself in another bayou.
