The Battle of Iuka was a United States Civil War battle fought on September 19, 1862 in Iuka, Mississippi.
Grant devised a plan for his left wing commander, Major General Edward Ord, and his men to advance on Iuka from the west; Rosecrans’s forces were to march from the southwest, arrive at Iuka on the 18th, and make a coordinated attack the next day.
Rosecrans’s army occupied Iuka and then mounted an unsuccessful pursuit; the Confederates joined Van Dorn for the Battle of Corinth II in October.

The battle of Corinth was the last general engagement which took place in the department with which we now have to do during the year 1862, except the disastrous battle of Chickasaw Bayou near the end of the year.
The battle was followed by a galloping pursuit of the enemy for not less than ten miles, nor did the chase surcease till the rebels had placed themselves beyond the Tallahatchee.
Colonel Hatch was not deceived by the feint.

The battles of Iuka (19 Sept. 62) and Corinth II (3-4 Oct. 62)
The battles of Iuka and Corinth materially effected the outcome of the battle of Perryville (8 Oct. 1862) by protecting Buell's rear during his race with Bragg to get to Louisville, Ky. Bragg lost the race and didn't win at Perryville either, and Confederate toops never again seriously menaced Kentucky.
IUKA is a little village on the Memphis and Charleston railway, in northern Mississippi, about thirty miles east of Corinth.

E.O.C. Ord, and his men to advance on Iuka from the west; Rosecrans’s forces were to march from the southwest, arrive at Iuka on the 18th, and make a coordinated attack the next day.
Although Rosecrans was supposed to traverse Fulton Road and cover it, he stated that he had not guarded the road because he feared dividing his force; Grant later approved this decision.
Rosecrans’s army occupied Iuka and then mounted a pursuit; the Confederate rearguard and overgrown terrain prevented the Union pursuit from accomplishing much.

Bear Creek, a few miles to the east of the Fulton road, is a formidable obstacle to the movement of troops in the absence of bridges, all of which, in September, 1862, had been destroyed in that vicinity.
I was very much disappointed at receiving a dispatch from Rosecrans after midnight from Jacinto, twenty-two miles from Iuka, saying that some of his command had been delayed, and that the rear of his column was not yet up as far as Jacinto.
I was disappointed at the result of the battle of Iuka--but I had so high an opinion of General Rosecrans that I found no fault at the time.

He doubts not that there are many good officers and men in that regiment whose cheeks burn with shame and indignation at the part the regiment acted, and he looks to them and to all its members, on the first opportunity, by conspicuous gallantry to wipe out the stain on their fair tame.
The rumors which followed the battle of Iuka were that Price had marched to the vicinity of Ripley and was being joined by Van Dorn, with all the available rebel forces in North Mississippi, for the purpose of capturing Corinth or breaking our line of communication and forcing us to retreat toward Columbus.
The division of General Lovell formed line of battle facing the rear on several occasions when it was reported the enemy was near, but not a gun was fired after the army retired from the Hatchie and Tuscumbia Bridges, nor did the enemy follow, except at a respectful distance.

During the 16th, 17th, and 18th, and up to the time of the engagement on the 19th, the division was most of the time in line of battle or bivouacked on the field.
On this day at Iuka, Mississippi, the 11th Ohio Battery suffered the greatest loss of any light artillery unit during the course of the American Civil War; in fact, their losses were 22% greater than any other battery for a single engagment, this according to Fox’s Regimental Losses.

After the battle of Corinth,the brigade was ordered from Oxford Ms, to reinforce the garrison at Port Hudson La. General Villepigue died on the march near Port Hudson on November 9.
January 7,1863,the consolidated regiment,consisting of the 39th and 1st Mississippi Regiments,commanded by Col. W.B. Shelby, was assigned to the brigade command of Gen. William Beall,on duty in the breastworks at Port Hudson.

Outraged at the heavy Union losses at the Battle of Shiloh, U.S. General Henry Halleck, commander-in-chief of the armed forces in the west, removed General Ulysses S. Grant from command and traveled to Pittsburgh Landing, the Union base of operations in the area, determined to led his men himself.
The second battle of Corinth began early on the morning of October 3rd as Federal troops intercepted the Confederates north and northwest of Corinth.

The Fifth was attached to General Sherman’s army in the march to Chattanooga in November, and in the battles that were fought about that city and among the mountains the regiment bore an honorable part.
Not long after the battle, Major Corse returned to the regiment and was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in place of Cummins, who was dismissed from the service by court-martial.
During these battles, from Resaca to Lovejoy, the losses of the Sixth were one hundred and fifty men, killed, wounded and missing, or about one half of the whole number that marched from Chattanooga.

The 26th was not noted for being at the front of the action until May 16, 1863 at the Battle of Champion Hill.
Two of the officers were killed in the battle and one squad was so close under the rebels guns that they were unable to retreat and were captured.
