Jenin - Voyager, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Jenin was a center of civil unrest during the Great Uprising of Palestinians in the years 1936-1939; in particular, it was the base of the pioneer of Arab militant activity, Sheikh Izz Ad-Din Al-Qassam (whom the Hamas military wing is named after).
The Jenin refugee camp was founded in 1953 to house Palestinians who fled or were expelled from Israeli territory during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
In April 2002, Jenin's refugee camp was the theatre of one of the most intense battles to occur during the al-Aqsa Intifada.

Al-Aqsa Intifada - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In January, 2002, the IDF Shayetet 13 naval commando captured the Karine A, a large boat carrying weapons from Iran presumably intended to be used by Palestine militants against Israel.
Especially fierce battles took place at the Jenin refugee camp: 32 Palestinian militants, 22 Palestinian civilians, and 23 Israeli soldiers were killed in the fighting.
The battle remains a flashpoint for both sides, due to fraudulent Palestinian allegations of a massacre of thousands of Palestinians that surfaced during the IDF's operations in the camp.

An additional 49 are missing; it is unclear how many of them perished in the fighting and how many either fled or were captured by Israeli troops.
In the final count, there may well be fewer dead in Jenin than the 78 killed in Nablus Casbah in a battle that took place at the same time.
But it is Jenin that has attracted worldwide attention because of the widespread destruction of property and because some of those who died during the fighting were mere spectators.

Research Guide to the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict
The BBC has obtained video footage which appears to show an incident in the West Bank city of Jenin two weeks ago in which two Palestinian children were killed by Israeli tank fire.
The Israeli army has apologised for causing the deaths of six-year-old Ahmad Abu Aziz and his 13-year-old brother Jamil, but said the tank crew opened fire to deter Palestinians breaking a curfew and approaching them.
However, the footage shows a tank firing the first of two shells, at close range, at a group of civilians who are running away.
