After moving to the left until he struck the Jerusalem Plank Road, Birney marched south along the road until he came to the Williams farm, where the road to Globe Tavern on the Weldon Railroad branched off to the west.
The affair ended with the Federal line extended beyond the Jerusalem Plank Road, but not as close to the Rebel line as desired and not as far as desired, since the Weldon Railroad was about a mile to a mile and a half in front of Wright's line.
The affair along the Jerusalem Plank Road was an inauspicious beginning to Federal siege operations.

Martha Plank Lantz lived to a ripe age of 96 years and is said to have had a remarkable memory and often talked about her grandfather and grandmother being kidnapped.
There is a large family of Tennessee Planks, that settled in Crawford County, Mo. Namely Benedict Plank, born in 1803, and died in Missouri in 1860.
As the roads were usually in a horrible condition three or four would generally go together, one man alone had no business on the road.

On June 21, the Union II Corps, supported by the VI Corps, attempted to cut the Weldon Railroad, one of the major supply lines into Petersburg.
William Mahone counterattacked, forcing the II Corps away from the railroad to positions on the Jerusalem Plank Road.
Although the Federals were driven from their advanced positions, and couldn’t permanently damage the railroad, they were able to extend their siege lines farther to the west.

After the 1st Battle of Bull Run, the defeated Union Army retreated back to their encampments around Washington D.C. In August, the 2nd was reassigned to Couch's Brigade, Division of the Potomac, until October, 1861.
After the horrific Battle of Cold Harbor in June 1864, the enlistments ran out for about 1/3 of the men who were still left in the 2nd Regiment.

Next to the left of Fort Sedgwick, and near the Jerusalem Plank Road, was Fort Davis, which was at a more comfortable distance from the enemy.
Yet that seems improbable, as the official surveys place the latter fort some four hundred yards to the south of the Plank Road, while I am certain that we struck the fort or redan in near proximity to the Plank Road and that this was always spoken of after the event as Fort “Damnation.”

Suffolk was a comparative backwater of the Civil War and during the period of January through April 1863, the 155th was engaged in many long reconnaisance marches, one battle (battle of the Deserted House) and incessant fatigue and picket duty.
After the disastrous battle at Ream's Station, the regiment's strength was reduced to 35 men and 3 officers. Men who recovered from previous battle wounds and those paroled from Confederate prison camps eventually increased the number to around 135 by the Appomattox Campaign of March, 1865.
