The Strasburg or Valley pike is the middle or center of three roads leading into Win- chester from the south, the other two being the Cedar Creek road on the west and the Front Royal road on the east.
The Confederate line of battle was 2 miles long, extending in a semi-circle from a ravine near the Front Royal road on the east to near the Cedar Creek road on the west.
The Confederates commenced the attack, advancing from Kernstown and occupying a position on the heights to the east of the Strasburg pike with the batteries, while the cavalry and infantry took position on the plain on the other side.

During the march information had reached me from a reliable source that the Federals were sending off their stores and troops from Winchester, and after arriving near Kernstown I learned from a source which had been remarkable for its reliability that the enemy's infantry force at Winchester did not exceed four regiments.
Colonel Barks and the officers and men of the Forty-second proved themselves worthy of the cause they were defending by the spirit with which this regiment took and held its position until its left was turned by the Federals, pressing upon the Fifth as it fell back.
Our number present on the evening of the battle was, of infantry 3,087, of which 2,742 were engaged; twenty-seven pieces of artillery, of which eighteen were engaged.

Since the 110th rendered noble, conspicuous and gallant service in the battle of Kernstown on March 23, 1862, the study of their achievement begs clarification and publication.
The 110th at Kernstown had approximately 300 men in the ranks, lost 1 officer and 7 enlisted men killed, 4 officers and 39 men wounded, none missing or captured for a total of 51 casualties, or an almost 20% casualty rate.
What is important is that the glorious exemplary service of the 110th in the Battle of Kernstown be stated and memorialized, and any further doubt of innuendo be abolished.

Major local battles included the First Battle of Kernstown in March of 1862, during which General Stonewall Jackson suffered his only tactical defeat during the Valley Campaign but did succeed in keeping Union troops in the Valley from leaving to reinforce McClellan on the peninsula.
In the Second Battle of Winchester in 1863, confederate troops successfully attacked and defeated Union troops occupying forts on the western side of Winchester.
Union troops were again defeated at the second battle of Kernstown in 1864.

The battle of Kernstown was Jacksons first battle of the valley campaign.
After a short skirmish outside Winchester Jackson pushes his famous 'foot cavalry' on to Kernstown and despite it being a Sunday, a day on which Jackson would not even write a letter let alone fight a battle, he decides to attack what he beleives is the rearguard of the Union army.
The battle fought was close and after a vicious firefight over the stone wall on Sandy Ridge the Confederates were pushed back in disorder.

Second Kernstown was the last major Confederate victory in the Shenandoah Valley and temporarily removed Federal control of Winchester and the northern Shenandoah Valley.
The battle was fought on much of the same ground as the First Battle of Kernstown in 1862.
It is interesting that Federal forces under Col. Hayes, who later became the President of the United States, fought directly against Gen. Breckinridge, who was a former Vice President of the United States and also the Democratic candidate for president in 1860.

James J. Shields' military career was capped by his division's defeat of legendary Confederate commander Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson at the Battle of Kernstown on March 23, 1862.
Shields, who had almost lost his life in the Mexican War, had his arm broken by a shell fragment during the skirmishing the day before the Kernstown battle.
Much of the tactical action in the battle was directed by Kimball, and he deserves credit for that, but Jackson's defeat under such circumstances was nearly assured, barring any large tactical blunder.

Not one article focused on a tactical unit at a given battle, and there were no tactical maps in the entire book.
This is a book in the Virginia Civil War Battles and Leaders series.I just recently purchased this book focusing on the little known campaign which preceded Jackson's famous Valley Campaign.
Only four maps, and only one map each on the twin battles is not a good sign.
