July 15, 1410 The Battle of Grunwald took place on this day, between the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania on one side (estimated 39,000 troops), and the Teutonic Knights on the other (about 27,000 troops).
In fact, it was estimated there were around 1.000 horseback Tatars at Grunwald, the core being the Lipka Tatars settled in Grand Duchy of Lithuania, under the leadership of Jalal ad-Din, the son of Khan Tokhtamysh.
The Lipka Tatars who fought on the Polish side at the Battle of Vienna, on 12th September 1683, wore a sprig of straw in their helmets to distinguish themselves from the Tatars fighting under Kara Mustafa on the Turkish side.

In the annals of World War II, that operation is not well known because it was a very small part of a very large offensive of the Soviet Red army against the fast retreating Nazi German armies.
To Ukrainians, this Battle of Brody is and will remain a significant historic event.
Needless to say, thousands died in battle, many were taken prisoner and many managed to join their compatriots in the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), heretofore fighting Germans and then continuing to fight the new occupiers, the Soviet Russians.

The insurrectionist forces were defeated by a combination of Austrian and peasant forces at the battle of Gdow and the insurrection was put down with great brutality by the Austrians, resulting in the abolition of the Commonwealth of Krakow.

Solemn requiem services (Panakhydas) for the repose of the souls of several thousands of young heroes who died in the Battle of Brody in July 1944, were celebrated in the Ukrainian Catholic and Orthodox churches in North Port at the conclusion of Sunday's Divine Liturgies.
In that battle, known by the name of a small city -- Brody -- in Western Ukraine (approximately 55 miles northeast of Lviv), several thousand young men and teenage heroes died in an attempt to resurrect the glory of Ukrainian military tradition.
After the battle approximately 3,000 men managed to break out of the encirclement, while an unknown number of survivors joined the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, which fought both the Nazi German and the Communist Russian occupiers of Ukraine for several more years.
