The inhospitable Koom Valley was home to an ancient battle between dwarfs and trolls that both species came to use as an excuse for their mutual enmity.
This is in part due to the battle being a convenient patch for rips in time often used by the History Monks, although the History of Thud suggests that something about the valley itself encourages violence (this might be related to the Summoning Dark).
It was a Cube, perpetually replaying sounds from the Battle of Koom Valley, that drove the painter Methodia Rascal insane during the painting of his life's work: The Battle of Koom Valley.

Though Koom Valley was a disaster for both sides, certain community leaders from each side have been spoiling for a rematch—something Vimes is duty-bound to prevent.
Vimes has a lot on his plate, anyway, what with the upcoming anniversary of Koom Valley (a battle between trolls and dwarves that is part of an age-old war), an unsolved murder that reveals the limitations of the Watch in dwarfish eyes, and the theft of a valuable painting from the Royal Art Museum.

This is very likely the initial cause of the animosity between trolls and dwarfs, even though, after hundreds of years, the feud goes on because it is a cultural tradition for both species.
It being a cultural tradition does not mean it is nice; trolls and dwarfs have repeated the Battle of Koom Valley several times, each side springing an ambush on the other, casualties are high.
The hostility lives on and is found in any place with a significant number of both species, for example, Ankh-Morpork; a serious riot has occurred in Men at Arms.

Thud is unusual in that a game consists of two battles - if you command the dwarfs in the first battle then you'll be in charge of the trolls in the second.
At the end of each battle, points are scored by the winning player and the result of the game is decided by combining the results of both battles.
This causes the troll to lose interest in proceedings and it leaves the arena for a long lie-down until the next battle.
