Between 1946 and 1950, the CPC was increasingly enjoying massive support from the Chinese people in the "War of Liberation," effectively implementing a People's war, while the KMT became increasingly isolated, only belatedly attempting to stem corruption and introduce popular reforms.
On October 1, 1949 the People's Republic of China was proclaimed by Mao Zedong, and by May 1950 the Civil War was brought to an end in the Battle of Kuningtou, which saw the KMT expelled from Mainland China but in control of Taiwan.

During the Chinese Civil War, the Republic of China (ROC) lost mainland China, including most of Fujian province, and was forced to relocate to Taiwan, while the victorious communist forces established the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949.
In the Battle of Kuningtou, however, ROC forces were able to defend the island of Quemoy just off the coast of Fujian from communist attack.
As a result, the Republic of China has been able to hold on to a number of offshore islands of Fujian, and has continued to maintain a separate Fujian provincial government to govern these islands, parallel to the province of Fujian in mainland China.

It is a fact well established that attempts by communist forces in Asia to annex the sovereignty of Taiwan heightened after the departure of the Japanese colonial forces in the Island in 1945.
It was during this period that communist forces in Asia, backed by their mentors in the former Soviet Union launched all-out attacks on Taiwan, prominent are the fierce battle of QUEMOY at Kuningtou in 1949; battle of TACHEN ISLAND from 1954-55 as well as the battle of the TAIWAN STRAIT in 1958.
The relationship between Taiwan and communist China has remained tense whereby the latter seeks to annex the sovereignty of Taiwan at all cost, including spilling the blood of innocent people.

A simple look at the facts showed that Mao’s forces had failed in taking Kinmen in the battle of Kuningtou (October 25—27, 1949) where the distance from the mainland was only two kilometers.
In that battle 20,000 attacked the island; in two days some 13,000 were killed and 7,000 captured.
If the CCP could not take Kinmen with an amphibious landing how could they expect to cross the 100 kilometers of the treacherous Taiwan Strait especially without air cover.
