With the 21st Battery, Royal Field Artillery, when it clattered its 15 pounders into action at Elandslaagte on the 21st October, 1899, was Corporal J. Power who was also involved, as shown by the bars on his medal, in the Defence of Ladysmith, the Battle of Laings Nek and also the fighting around Belfast.
The range itself, which includes a number of names which were to be applied to associated engagements, reaches from Commando Nek, Moolman's Nek, Nelspoort, to Slabbert's and Retief's Neks on the north, and by the Roodebergen southeast to Naauwpoort Nek, Golden Gate and Generaals' Kop, connecting the main Drakensberg Ridge with the Roodebergen.
The following day orders were issued for a four-point attack on Retief's Nek, Slabbert's Nek, Commando Nek and Witnek, the first two falling within a couple of days.

n the British Army, Colours were last carried into action by the 58th Northamptonshire Regiment during the First Anglo-Boer War at the battle of Laings Nek in January 1881.
It became tradition for junior officers of the rank of Ensign to carry the Colours on parade and into battle, with a Colour Sergeant to help protect them.
The last Canadian regiment to carry its Colours in battle was Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.

 JOUBERT
Joubert became Commandant General leading his forces to victory at Laings Nek and at Majuba Hill where he defeated the British.
He died on 26th March 1900 officially as a direct result of an injury sustained at the battle of Willow Grange when he was thrown to the ground and his horse rolled on him.
They cited the battle of Ladysmith where De Wet had requested chasing after the British and Joubert had denied him, saying "when God gives a finger do not take the hand".

 Historical Note on the use of Colours
They were last carried in battle at Laings Nek in 1881.
At the disaster of Isandhlwann, 1879, two subalterns received posthumous Victoria Crosses for their endeavours to save the Colours and from this date the practice of carrying Colours in battle gradually came to an end.

While the debate was in progress, the 58th Northamptonhire Regiment carried their Colours into action at the battle of Laings Nek during the 1st Anglo-Boer War (28 Jan. 1881).
The Secretary of War polled generals and colonels on the matter in July 1881.
The Colours provided a conspicuous target for the Boer snipers, and Lt. Baillie carrying the Regimental Colour was repeatedly wounded before being killed.

On 28 January, 1881, Swart Dirk's son, Dirk Cornelius, 25, was killed at the Battle of Laings Nek.
During the Transvaal War of Independence he served on General Joubert's staff and was one of the signatories to the Peace Treaty at O'Neill's cottage.
On 8 March his family joined the main Boer laager at Majuba.

Ghandi and his stretcher bearers are reported to have performed sterling work during the bloody Battle of Spioenkop.
Its’ grounds also served as a temporary medical station for the British wounded after the Battle of Majuba and there are a number of mass graves in the grounds.

He served in the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902, gaining the Queen's Medal with four clasps (Transvaal, Laing's Nek, Orange Free State and Defence of Ladysmith) and the King's Medal with two clasps (South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902).

The last occasion on which a British Army regiment carried its colours in action was at the Battle of Laings Nek (1881), during the Transvaal War (1880-81).
The last occasion on which the red coat was worn in action by a British regiment was at the Battle of Ginniss, in the Sudan, in 1885.

Colley unsuccessfully tested the Boer defences at Laing's Nek and Ingogo Heights on 28 January and 8 February 1881 respectively.
The Transvalers then stationed a large force under General Piet Joubert at Laing's Nek just inside Natal territory, to counter any reinforcements that might be sent in from the coast.
The other, an obelisk, was built by Boer veterans and members of the public to mark the heroism of the Transvalers.

General Colley's force was so weakened from the Battle of Laing's Nek that he was forced to wait for reinforcements.
Colley maintained that his position was impregnable but by two o'clock that day not only did he lie dead on the battlefield but his force had had been chased off having suffered some two hundred and fifty casualties against the Boer six.
Although the entry form to the site contains a map giving details of the battle it is still worth engaging a guide who can fill in the details and the fascinating stories that surround this battle.

While he waited for reinforcements from Durban, General Colley and his expeditionary force of about 1 000 men made an unsuccessful frontal attack on the Boer positions at Laing's Nek, about 25 km north of Newcastle (28 January 1881).
The penultimate battle in the Transvaal's first war against Britain was fought at Skuinshoogte ('sloping hill') about 16 km northwest of Newcastle, a little more than a week before the decisive battle at Majuba.
General Nicolaas Smit moved to the rear of Colley's positions and, on 8 February, engaged a British contingent of about 300 at Skuinshoogte in the Ingogo Heights.

The last time that the Colours were carried into battle by a British regiment was in 1881, when the 58th Regiment, later the Rutlandshire Regiment and by 1914, part of the Northamptonshire Regiment, suffered heavy loss at Laing's Nek on 28 January of that year in the first South African War, 1880-1881.
In my first regiment, the wife of the 2i/c (the Second-in-Command) was known as the '3i/c' (we had a bachelor colonel) and the wife of one of the Sergeant-Majors was known as '4i/c'.

During the Battle of Laings Nek in the First Boer War Pte John Doogan of the 1st Dragoon Guards won a Victoria Cross for rescuing a dismounted officer, Major Brownlow, under enemy fire and despite the fact that he was, himself, wounded.
John won a VC in Somaliland in 1903, completing a unique record of three members of the same family winning the award, and died of wounds in France in 1915.
Hubert gained fame as a controversial soldier, he was a ringleader of the Curragh Mutiny in 1914 and commanded the 5th Army in France, being sacked in 1918 for his perceived failure to halt the German advance of March 1918.
