Lake Erie (pronounced [ˈi.ɹi]) (French: lac Érié), bounded on the north by Ontario, on the south by the states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, and on the west by the state of Michigan, is one of the five Great Lakes of North America.
Lake Erie is primarily fed by the Detroit River (from Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair) and drains via the Niagara River and Niagara Falls into Lake Ontario.
During the 1970s, Lake Erie's future was jeopardized by the overabundance of phosphorus in the water, which resulted in rank smelling algal blooms fouling both cobbled and sandy beaches.

Ok, this is the location where you can go to see my photos of the Niagara, Battle Monument to the Battle of Lake Erie and the exhibit of cannon shell damage to the replica of the USS Lawrence hull.
I recall the answer given by the members of the Niagara as being that due to her tiller and lake sailing built, it would be, or is difficult to sail her along the Atlantic Ocean.
The issue on Lake Erie was one of draught and the fact it was far more difficult to construct large ships that far out on the frontier (especially as so much material was being used on Ontario], and it was even more difficult to man them.
