The Battle of San Juan Hill was the bloodiest and most famous battle of the Spanish-American War.
Lawton's division, which was supposed to join the fight early on July 1, did not arrive until noon on July 2, having encountering unexpectedly heavy resistance in the battle of El Caney.
The battle was the climactic scene of the 1997 film Rough Riders starring Tom Berenger as Theodore Roosevelt and Gary Busey as General Wheeler.

On June 30, partly due to the vacancy created by the contraction of a fever by Brigadier General Samuel Young, and partly due to the regiment's service at Las Guasimas, Colonel Wood was given a field promotion to Brigadier General with 5th Corps, and Lt. Col.
Due to exigencies of terrain, Roosevelt and other officers were forced to abandon their mounts for the operation at San Juan, or "Teddy's charge up San Juan Hill," as it was reported in the American press.
Joined by other units, notably elements of the 9th and 10th Regulars (African-American "buffalo soldiers[?]"), the Rough Riders assaulted and eventually succeeded in securing the region, contributing to the victory of Santiago, which was probably the defining battle of the Cuban campaign.

Throughout the day, indeed throughout the days of ground war that followed, it was commonplace for the commanding officers to lead from the forefront of the battle, often at greater peril than that of their enlisted soldiers.
While valor abounded on the jungle ridges around Las Guasimas on the morning of June 24, 1889; he was the only hero to be so recognized for his courage in that first Army engagement of the war.
Refusing medical attention, the intrepid volunteer continued to battle, receiving wounds in the hip, a second wound to the neck (the bullet remained lodged against the bones), his left hand, scalp, and a third neck wound.

The Battle of Las Guasimas, the first true clash of arms in the Cuban campaign of the Spanish-American War, was a bloody skirmish which ended indecisively in favour of Spain on June 24, 1898.
A contingent of Spaniards, having fought a skirmish with American landing forces near Siboney on June 23, had retired to their lightly entrenched positions at Las Guasimas and repulsed American and Cuban raids with some difficulty.
He was in overall command of the division that included the 1st US Volunteer cavalry, or Rough Riders, 1st Regular Cavalry, and the 10th Regular Cavalry of the famed African-American Buffalo Soldiers, who marched his force out from Siboney the next day.

For his role in saving Major Bell at Las Guasimas in the Spanish American War, Walley was recommended for a second Medal of Honor, but instead was awarded a Certificate of Merit for distinguished service for his "extraordinary exertion in the preservation of human life."

At the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, Wood, with Roosevelt, organized the 1st Volunteer Cavalry regiment, popularly known as the Rough Riders.
Wood commanded the regiment in a successful engagement known as the Battle of Las Guasimas, and later led them to a famous victory at Kettle Hill and San Juan Heights as commander of a larger force to which the Rough Riders were attached.
After San Juan, Wood led the 2nd Cavalry Brigade for the rest of the war; he stayed in Cuba after the war and was appointed the Military Governor of Santiago in 1898, and of Cuba from 1899–1902.
