Nikolai Ivanov, the Russian commander of the Southwest Front, was expecting an Austrian offensive near the fortress of Lemberg.
The battle decimated the Austro-Hungarian Army, destroyed a large portion of its trained officers, and crippled Austria.

Units are rated for combat and movement, while HQs have even a range of command, and artillery units a range of attack for their barrage strength.
The Austrian has to defend the city of Lemberg in the center of the map (surrounded by forts which give a two columns shift bonus to the Austrians and have an intrinsic value of two), so this is the focus of the Russian offensive.
Anyway, the game is worth a try or two, as the system works in recreating the attritional feel of the war, the graphics are goods and the time you have to spend not particularly relevant (a couple of hours or so).

If some of those alive in 1914 will eye-witness the Armageddon, then the deadline would be on 2014 since a human life normally reaches 100 years of age.
But then again perhaps its not the argument as to whever things are better or worse in the post 1914 era, but rather a perceptive ideal that humans "know" what is better or worse.
The world lost a lot of fine people in that 1914-1918 war not "for no reason" as we were constantly told, but so we could make our own decisions, then again in 1939-1945, these people died so that we may express our views in an areana such as this, without fear of what we said.
