 Ships and Fleets in Anglo
The sea battle of the Les Espagnols sur Mer in 1350 pitted the English against the Spanish who had ships which impressed Froissart with their size.
As noted above for the battles at Sluys and Les Espagnols sur Mer, our knowledge of the types of vessels employed is essential for a proper understanding of these conflicts.

 History of the Royal Navy
Les Espagnols sur Mer, fought in the Channel off Winchelsea in 1350, is possibly the first English sea battle; the English captured 14 Spanish ships.
The Battle of Sluys in 1340 was a significant English victory, with Edward III of England's 160 ships (mostly hired merchant vessels) assaulting a French force in the Zwyn estuary and capturing 180 French ships in hand-to-hand combat.
The 14th century also saw the creation of the post of Clerk of the King's Ships, who appears from 1344 on as in charge of some 34 royal vessels.

This battle, called Les Espagnols Sur Mer, resulted in Edward III receiving the nicknames of "Avenger of the Merchants" and "King of the Sea."38 Unfortunately, despite those two spectacular victories, Edward III could not control English pirates.
However, were it not for the victories that Edward III had at sea, none of these feats would have happened.35 The first of these victories was in 1340 at the port of Sluys in Flanders.
He tried to rein in the worst of the internal feuds by negotiating an end to the Yarmouth-Cinque Ports dispute in 1348.39 As a result, pirates moved their bases from the Ports to the harbors of the western shires like Devon and Dorset.
