The battle near the Village of Lesnaya (September 28 1708) was called the mother of the Battle of Poltava, where the Russians beat Swedes.
Two centuries after the battle in 1908 they erected a memorial at the former battlefield: Apostle Peter’s Chapel and the statue of a Russian eagle with the Swedish banner in his claws.
The field on the outskirts of the village of Buinichi near Mogilev was the place where a group of peasant rebels and Cossacks joined in a battle with the 18,000-strong cavalry army of the Great Duchy of Lithuania.

The Battle of Lesnaya was one of the decisive battles of the Great Northern War.
Lewenhaupt, one of Sweden's foremost generals, was the commander of one of Sweden's best armies, based at the Baltic Sea port of Riga.
The battle itself was closely contested and both forces suffered heavy casualties.

Sweden was the dominant military power of eastern Europe and was led by the young but brilliant King Charles XII of Sweden, who was to prove to be a worthy adversary for Peter.
Russia turned out to be ill-prepared to fight the well-trained Swedes, and their first attempt at seizing the Baltic coast ended in disaster at the Battle of Narva in 1700.
After crossing into Russia in 1708, Charles defeated Peter at Golovchin (July 3, 1708) but then suffered his first defeat at the Battle of Lesnaya (September 28, 1708), when Peter crushed the left wing of the Swedish army moving down from Riga to join Charles's main army.

The Battle of Poltava (or Pultowa) was a battle between the armies of Peter I of Russia and Charles XII of Sweden on 28 June (new style 8 July) 1709, the most famous of the battles of the Great Northern War.
To make matters worse for the Swedish, Charles was wounded during the siege on June 17 when he was hit in the foot by a Russian sniper, during an inspection of the Swedish outposts on the banks of the Vorskla, and had to turn over command to Field Marshal Carl Gustav Rehnskiöld.

Charles signed the Treaty of Warsaw with Poland in February 1705 which was for peace and commerce and defeated and he defeated the Saxons at the Battle of Fraustadt in February 1706.
The winter of 1708 to 1709 was one of the worst on records and had a major impact on Sweden's army that was wintering in the Ukraine.
Also, the advance of Lewenhaupt was stopped at the Battle of Lesnaya in 1708 where he lost his entire supply column.

The Battle of Fraustadt was fought on February 3, 1706 between Swedish and Saxon-Russian forces near Fraustadt (present-day Wschowa) in Poland.
The main part of the Saxon army fled to the south, but the Swedish cavalry on the left, previously so clumsy, now got away in advance of them and succeeded to stop them until the Swedish infantry got there and had them surrounded.
In the end 7,600 Saxons were taken prisoner and more were killed in the battle.
