Leyte's population of over 900,000 people, most of whom engaged in agriculture and fishing, could be expected to assist an American invasion, since many residents already supported the guerrilla struggle against the Japanese in the face of harsh repression.
Preliminary operations for the Leyte invasion began at dawn on 17 October with minesweeping operations and the movement of the 6th Rangers toward three small islands in Leyte Gulf.
On 23 October 1944, the approach of the enemy surface vessels was revealed and as U.S. naval units moved out to intercept, the ensuing air and naval battle on 23-26 October, 1944 known as the Battle of Leyte Gulf represented the largest naval battle in the Pacific.

The Battle of Leyte Gulf was one of the largest naval battles in history.
The battles of 1943 drove the Imperial Japanese Army from its bases in the Solomon Islands, and in 1944 a series of Allied amphibious landings supported by large carrier forces captured the Marianas Islands.
This was also the last battle in which one force (the Americans, in this case) were able to cross the T of their opponents, enabling the US ships to bring all their firepower to bear on the Japanese ships.

The Battle of Leyte in the Pacific campaign of World War II was the invasion and conquest of Leyte in the Philippines by American and Allied forces under the command of General Douglas MacArthur between October 20 and December 31 1944.
For the Japanese, holding on to the Philippines was vital: it was an important source of supplies, especially rubber, and it commanded the sea routes to Borneo and Sumatra by which oil was brought to Japan.
The first American plans for the invasion of the Philippines was for a simultaneous landing on Leyte and Mindanao to the south but lack of landing craft and shipping meant that the plan had to be scaled back.
