Spain used ironclads against Chilean and Peruvian ports from 1864 to 1866, destroying the fortress at El Callao (see Battle of Callao), and the ironclad Numancia was the first to circumnavigate the world (arriving in Cádiz on September 20 1867, and earning the motto: "Enloricata navis que primo terram circuivit").
Waged between the Austro-Hungarian and Italian navies, the battle pitted combined fleets of wooden frigates and corvettes and ironclad warships on both sides in the largest European naval battle since the Battle of Trafalgar.
The age of the ironclad as a main line battle craft came to an end around 1890, as iron- or steel-hulled pre-dreadnought battleships were developed and deployed.

 The History of Naval Design
The former were intended to sail in line of battle, and engage the enemy broadside on, at distances of sometimes 10 metres, with the aim of boarding and capturing, rather than sinking, the enemy.
Lissa was a scrappy and clumsy affair with ironclads blundering about, unable to aim with much precision, and hence missing or colliding with each other.
Lissa was nevertheless indecisive and insignificant, and typically, the powers took all the wrong lessons from the battle: for the next 30 years all navies were obsessed with ramming, and ironclads had heavy underwater 'beaks' at the bows.

The original plan of Admiral Cervera to engage the American fleet off Santiago de Cuba was to sacrifice his flagship, the armoured cruiser Infanta María Teresa, in trying to disable the American flagship USS Brooklyn.
The plan was likely influenced by the battle of Lissa in 1866 in which the Italian flagship was sunk by ramming.
As a result, the Teresa was crippled before she could inflict any damage on the Brooklyn, though the objective of causing confusion in the American line was attained to some extent.

Though subsequent events showed the ram to be a difficult weapon to use effectively and all too likely to harm friends more than foes, the incidents of the Civil War and the 1866 war between Austria and Italy kept it in favor beyond the end of the 19th Century.
The battle of Lissa of 1866 contributed to “ram fever” in the 1870s and 1880s.
On 20 July 1866, the armored warships of Austria and Italy both deflected many direct gunnery hits, but Italy's newest armored sail-and-steam frigate, Re d'Italia, caught at a dead stop, was rammed by the Austrian flagship Ferdinand Maximilian and sunk.

Jutland was a significant battle, perhaps not in terms of results on the field, but definitely in terms of forces engaged, casualties inflicted, and tactical and design theories deflated or confirmed.
And it's a battle reeking with "what if" possibilities, both in terms of decision-making and luck (both good and bad), which is why it remains a favorite of naval gamers.
It was, after all, a literal world war, with sea battles (or at least their potential) of varying sizes taking place over most of the whole globe.

The Austrian Frigate SMS Novara 1843-99
The battle was a notable one - it was the first on the high seas since Trafalgar in 1815, and the last to be fought solely between squadrons of wooden ships.
The victory was short-lived, however, as on 3 July the Prussian army defeated the Austrians at the battle of Königgrätz.
On 20 July 1866, off the island of Lissa in the eastern Adriatic, the Novara was one of 27 Austrian warships, carrying some 532 guns and commanded by the 38 year old Rear Admiral Wilhelm von Tegetthoff, which defeated the Italian fleet of 37 ships (645 guns) under the command of Admiral Persano.
