Battle of Lissa (1866) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The naval Battle of Lissa island took place on 20 July 1866 in the Adriatic Sea near the island of Lissa (now Vis) and was a victory for an outnumbered Austrian force over an Italian force.
It was the first major sea battle involving ships using iron and steam, and one of the last to involve deliberate ramming.

The Battle class heavy cruiser was the workhorse of the fleet of the Armies of the Southern Cross, and also one of the backbones of the Expeditionary Forces, until most of the class was destroyed over Terra in the Second Robotech War.
The Battle class originated in the Geneva class, which was effectively identical save for a mix of Zentraedi energy weapons and an anti-mecha and heavy missile battery based on the obsolete Oberth class.
The Battle class was represented in the EF with thirty-four vessels, ten of which were sent back to Earth with the Marcus Antonius, or later with the first REF counterattack against the Invid.

Modern battles Count Schlieffen characterizes even more than earlier battles as a "struggle for the flanks." Therefore he stresses the necessity, in case parts of an army have made frontal contact with the enemy, that the neighboring columns be allowed to march further so that they may be able to turn against flank and rear.
The problem of fighting a battle of extermination with a strength half that of the enemy was, however, solved to a certain degree.
Ney reached the battle field in time, he was not sent against the flank, but against the point of the right wing and Blucher, however great his wish to hold out, was able to escape the fatal blow and was obliged to do so.

 The History of Naval Design
The former were intended to sail in line of battle, and engage the enemy broadside on, at distances of sometimes 10 metres, with the aim of boarding and capturing, rather than sinking, the enemy.
Lissa was a scrappy and clumsy affair with ironclads blundering about, unable to aim with much precision, and hence missing or colliding with each other.
Lissa was nevertheless indecisive and insignificant, and typically, the powers took all the wrong lessons from the battle: for the next 30 years all navies were obsessed with ramming, and ironclads had heavy underwater 'beaks' at the bows.
