These battles are generally considered to signal the start of the Eighty Years' War that ended with the independence of the United Provinces.
At the Battle of the Downs in 1639 a Spanish fleet carrying troops was destroyed by the Dutch navy, and the Spanish found themselves unable to adequately supply and reinforce their forces in the Netherlands.

The Battle of Lutter (Lutter am Barenberge) took place during the Thirty Years' War on 27 August 1626 between the forces of the Protestant Christian IV of Denmark and those of the Catholic League.
Lutter am Barenberge lies to the south of the town of Salzgitter, then within the Imperial Circle Estate of Lower Saxony, and now in northwest Germany.
Following the Battle of Lutter, the princes of north Germany as far as Mecklenburg ceased their support of Christian IV.

The election of the Catholic zealot Ferdinand, Archduke of Styria, as King of Bohemia caused the Bohemian Protestants to fear for their religious freedom, and in May 1618, at Hradcany castle, two Catholic councillors (Martinitz[?] and Slavata[?]) were thrown from the castle windows.
The Battle of White Mountain, near Prague in 1620 was a serious blow to Protestant ambitions in the region.
In 1632 Gustavus Adolphus dies at the Battle of Lützen (although the Swedes win the battle), and in 1634 the Swedes are defeated at the battle of Nordlingen, but they continue to fight in the war until the end in 1648.

The two sides met soon after and on April 25th Mansfeld began the battle against the inexperienced Wallenstein.
With his infantry and artillery skilled to give illusion that his army was smaller than the Protestants, Ernst von Mansfeld attempted to use the sheer weight of the number of his men to push across the river.

 Battle of Lutter (am Barenberge), 27 August 1626
The army of Christian of Denmark had entered a gap between two Imperial armies, commanded by Wallenstein and Tilly, hoping to take advantage of the split between them.
Christian escaped the field with under half of the troops he had started with, and lost most of his allies in Germany, forcing him to retreat back towards the coast, a spent force, at least for the moment.
Despite its age (first published in 1938), this is still one of the best english language narratives of this most complex of wars, tracing the intricate dance of diplomacy and combat that involved all of Europe in the fate of Germany.
