  Battle of Lutter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Battle of Lutter (Lutter am Barenberge) took place during the Thirty Years' War on 27 August 1626 between the forces of the Protestant Christian IV of Denmark and those of the Catholic League.
Lutter am Barenberge lies to the south of the town of Salzgitter, then within the Imperial Circle Estate of Lower Saxony, and now in northwest Germany.
The battle resulted in a heavy defeat of Christian IV's troops by those of Emperor Ferdinand II, led by the Catholic League general Johan Tzerclaes, Count of Tilly.

 Thirty Years' War
The election of the Catholic zealot Ferdinand, Archduke of Styria, as King of Bohemia caused the Bohemian Protestants to fear for their religious freedom, and in May 1618, at Hradcany castle, two Catholic councillors (Martinitz[?] and Slavata[?]) were thrown from the castle windows.
The Battle of White Mountain, near Prague in 1620 was a serious blow to Protestant ambitions in the region.
In 1632 Gustavus Adolphus dies at the Battle of Lützen (although the Swedes win the battle), and in 1634 the Swedes are defeated at the battle of Nordlingen, but they continue to fight in the war until the end in 1648.

With his infantry and artillery skilled to give illusion that his army was smaller than the Protestants, Ernst von Mansfeld attempted to use the sheer weight of the number of his men to push across the river.

At the Battle of Breitenfeld (1631), Adolphus' forces defeated the Catholic League led by General Tilly.
