A "battle of encounter" is a meeting engagement where the opposing sides collide in the field without either having prepared their attack or defence.

The Battle of Trafalgar, fought on 21 October 1805, is part of the War of the Third Coalition assembled by Britain against France.
In 2005, the 200th anniversary of the battle was marked by six days of celebrations in Portsmouth during June and July, and at St Paul's Cathedral (where Nelson is entombed) and in Trafalgar Square in London in October, as well as across the rest of the UK.
