The pursuit of the retreating Turks after the Battle of Romani had seen raids on Turkish outposts at Mazar (September 17) and Maghara (October 15) but both positions were eventually evacuated by the Turks without a fight.
The main offensive was planned as the building of the military railway from the canal began to approach El Arish which marked the first significant water supply on the eastern side of the Sinai.

I was rewritting my chapter of this Battle, which is from a Camel Corps view, and found that there appears to be a mistake in the availible records on which Turkish redoubt fell first to our troops.
Magdhaba was a small settlement on the north side of the Wadi El Arish which at this time of year was dry and contained the only wells for many miles.
General Chauval was now limited to the time he could spend at Magdhaba as the animals had not drunk for some time and with a battle to be fought during a hot day and little water at Magdhaba meant that the town would need to fall quickly or the animals would be in trouble.

There were no 5 MG's at Magdhaba and only one possible MG there, no Regt history records capturing any MG's which is strange as they claim to be under there fire, so where did the one damaged MG claimed come from, well no records yet give that.
All in all the garrision at Magdhaba was a large prison force awaiting capture by the British.
As to the later, the battles of late 1916 and early 1917 are to again use as few troops as they could.

Magdhaba, a village located in the northern Sinai desert, was the scene of an action fought on 23 December 1916 when Turkish forces blocking the route to Palestine were attacked by Major General Harry Chauvel's ANZAC Mounted Division, which had the Imperial Camel Corps attached.
Success in this hard fought action was secured through a resolute assault with the bayonet by the 1st Light Horse Brigade, commanded by Brigadier Charles Cox, just as Chauvel ordered his force to withdraw.
This action, combined with the success at Rafa on 9 January 1917, opened the way for the final expulsion of the Turks from Sinai.
