Franco-Prussian War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, the lessons of the battles of Mars-La-Tour and Gravelotte were forgotten, in which thousands of Germans perished in frontal assaults against entrenched French positions, and would have to be painfully re-learned in subsequent conflicts such as the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-78 and the Boer War.
The battle at first appeared in the French favor for they had better armed rifles, the Chassepot, which was a early bolt-action rifle replacing the musket with a range of over 1,500 yards, far superior to the Prussian Dreyse bolt-action rifle, also called the needle-gun, which had a range of only 600 yards.
The Battle of Gravelotte, or Gravelotte-St. Privat, was the largest battle during the Franco-Prussian War.

VIONVILLE - LoveToKnow Article on VIONVILLE
, a village of Lorraine, between Metz and the French frontier, celebrated as the scene of the battle of Vion-ville (Rezonville or Mars-la-Tour), fought on the i6th of August 1870 between the French and the Germans (see METZ and FRANCO-GERMAN WAR).
Two years later he was placed at the cost of the prince de la Cisjerne under the violinist G. Pugnani at Turin, where he became violinist in the court chapel.
Two years later he was appointed leader of the prince de Soubise's private orchestra; and in 1788 he undertook the direction of the opera, raising the performances, with Cherubini's assistance, to a very high level.

Battle of Mars-La-Tour - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Battle of Mars-La-Tour was fought on 16 August 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War near the town of Mars-La-Tour in north-east France.
The Battle of Mars-La-Tour is also notable for one of the very few successful cavalry charges of modern warfare.
The battle had been a decisive victory for the greatly outnumbered Prussians.

Vionville Mars-la-Tour, Battle of - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about Vionville Mars-la-Tour, Battle of
This bought sufficient time to allow Prussian reserves to arrive and strengthen the battle line, while at the same time the extended left flank turned north and curled round the front of the French to cut their escape route.
Battle was eventually joined in the evening; the Prussian attack the following morning, by General Rheinbaben, was not pressed with much vigour and was therefore beaten off by the French.
The battle is mainly remembered for a heroic but near-suicidal Prussian cavalry charge against the French artillery.

 deathride.txt
The Battle of Mars-La-Tour -- or "Vionville" as the Germans index it, or "Rezonville" as every Frenchmen prefers, except the unfortunate Marshal Bazaine who insisted on calling it "the defence of Metz" at his court-martial -- was arguably the decisive engagement of the Franco-Prussian War.
And a very peculiar battle it was, one that on its face seems an unpromising candidate for translation into a board game.
As a result, 16 August, 1870, the day of battle, would dawn with a German cavalry division, Rheinbaben’s 5th from the German 2nd Army, sitting undetected, unmolested and astride the Bazaine’s line of march.

Amazon.com: Books: Day of Battle: Mars-La-Tour
A Day of Battle is an excellent tactical-level account of the Battle of Mars-la-Tour on 16 August 1870, which author David Ascoli claims not only decided the outcome of the Franco-Prussian War but the future of Europe.
The resulting battle, which involved the last great European cavalry engagement of the old style, led to French defeat and a breach in the European balance of power which lasted for nearly a century.
Both battles were unusual in that a string of German mistakes and favorable terrain offered the French a real chance to inflict crushing defeats on the Germans, but in each case the opportunity was wasted.

 Sedan.html
The battle was begun to the east and northeast of Sedan, as early as half-past four o'clock by the German right wing -the fighting being desultory-and near the same hour the Bavarians attacked Bazeilles.
Here the slaughter of the French was awful, for in addition to the deadly volleys from the solid battalions of their enemies, the skirmishers, who had rallied in knots at advantageous places, were now delivering a severe and effective fire.
About noon, after many preliminary skirmishes, the action was begun according to the plan I have already outlined, the Germans advancing their left while holding on strongly with their right, and it was this latter wing (the First Army) that came under my observation from the place where the king's headquarters were located.

 Articles - Battle of Worth
The Battle of Wörth, also known as the Battle of Reichshoffen or as the Battle of Fröschwiller, occurred on 6 August 1870 in the opening stages of the Franco-Prussian War.
The battle was won and cavalry only were needed to reap its consequences, but the Prussian cavalry division had been left behind without orders and did not reach the battlefield until late at night.
A sudden and violent storm broke over the bivouacs, and when it was over, the men, wet and restless, began to move about, light fires, etc. Many of them broke out of camp and went into Worth, which was unoccupied, though Prussians were only 300 yards from the sentries.

 Cannae
Modern battles Count Schlieffen characterizes even more than earlier battles as a "struggle for the flanks." Therefore he stresses the necessity, in case parts of an army have made frontal contact with the enemy, that the neighboring columns be allowed to march further so that they may be able to turn against flank and rear.
Ney reached the battle field in time, he was not sent against the flank, but against the point of the right wing and Blucher, however great his wish to hold out, was able to escape the fatal blow and was obliged to do so.
The problem of fighting a battle of extermination with a strength half that of the enemy was, however, solved to a certain degree.

 Clasps to the KDM 1870/71
December 4, 1870: The second battle of Orléans leads to German reoccupation of the city (captured in October, it had been lost to the French after the defeat of the Bavarians at the battle of Coulmiers on Nov. 11) and the division of the Army of the Loire in two.
The battle ends in a draw after the French fail to capitalize on their advantage, allowing the Prussians to cut off the French route of withdrawal.
August 16, 1870: Attempting to cutoff the French retreat from Metz, advance elements of the 2nd Army unwittingly stumble upon numerically superior French forces (the Army of the Rhine under Marshal Bazaine) to the west of Metz (120,000 French against 66,000 Germans).

Horses - Endurance Riding And Famous Rides
During the Franco-Prussian War, a squadron of Dragoons of the Guard (about 400 riders), rode a hundred miles in two days, then fought immediately in the great battle of Mars-la-Tour.
The test of a good ride is not altogether in its finish and the willingness of rider and horse, but whether or not the troops (or individual rider and his mount) are fit for instant further action when the ride has been finished.
During the early stages of the World War, French and German cavalry squadrons of several hundred riders often recorded rides of sixty to seventy miles a day for two or three days, often in bad weather.

 Leaders and Battles: Mars-La-Tour,
The battle is chiefly remarkable for the desperate charges of the German cavalry, and especially of Von Bredow's brigade, against the French infantry, under cover of which the shattered German infantry was enabled to reform.
The action is also known as the Battle of Vionville.
The losses were about equal, amounting to about 16,000 killed and wounded on each side.

European Warfare from 1816 to 1913
We learn, for example, that the vast majority of the regiment's casualties at the Battle of Münchengrätz were due to heat stroke, and that during the Battle of Jicin Corporal Süss was credited with shooting a mounted Prussian officer - an action for which he later received the Silver Bravery Medal II Class.

 Gravelotte-St.Privat 1870
In the furious battle of Mars-la-Tour that was to follow, III Corps supported for most of the day only by X Corps and 2 Cavalry Divisions, held up the entire French army.
The French were very dilatory in their efforts to escape the pursuing forces and their rearguard was attacked in what became the battle of Columbey.
In the historical battle, both these Corps were held in reserve and virtually uncommited with the exception of their Corps artillery assests, which were leant to the Corps in front of them.

 Franco-Prussian War Information
While purely random events, such as storms or the right person dying at the right time, might have had some effect on history, these only influence a single battle or slightly alter the outcome of a war, but would not mean the difference between victory and defeat.
This theory is predicated on the notion that the outcome of wars is not randomly determined, but fully determined on factors such as doctrine, economies, and power.

This narrative is supported by ten maps: Europe in 1870, the main campaigns of the war, the battles on the frontier, the situation at Metz on 14-15 August 1870, the Battle of Mars-la-Tour, two maps on the Battle of Gravelotte-St Privat, the Battle of Sedan, the siege of Paris, and Europe after the war.
Furthermore, the specter of revolution that appeared in Paris during the Communard scared the Prussians sufficiently to actually assist in rebuilding the French army in order to suppress that political cancer, lest it spread to other European countries.
After some brief sections detailing the background to the war, followed by equally brief sections on the opposing sides and the outbreak of war, Stephen Badsey moves into his main 24-page narrative of the war.
