One of the great naval battles of WWII ensued from the American landings on Leyte as the opponents sought to reinforce units already on Leyte.

Originally, it was intended for the 503rd to jump on Mindoro but due to inadequate airstrip facilities on Leyte an airborne landing was not possible.
Almost immediately after returning to Mindoro from Corregidor, the Combat Team was called upon to bolster the 40th Division which was bogged down on the Island of Negros, in the Central Philippines.
The objectives of the proposed jump, a strategic bridge and a large lumber mill, were destroyed by Japanese forces, thereby eliminating the first objectives of the 503d.

Airfields in the Southwest of Mindoro would be much closer to the targets on the big island.
The edict remained in force for most of our voyage from Leyte to Mindoro since we were under attack, or expected to be under attack most of the time.
We never had a significant rainstorm during our occupation of Mindoro so we had no way of knowing what the river was like under those circumstances but we suspected the stream bed could be a raging torrent.

On 12 March 1944 the Joint Chiefs of Staff rearranged the schedules of advance of both prongs of the Pacific Theater directing MacArthur to plan for the invasion of Luzon and Nimitz to plan for the invasion of Formosa early in 1945.
The Japanese hastily reassembled their naval forces and sailed northwestward into the Battle of the Philippine Sea (19-20 June 1944) where the unprepared and unsupported Japanese suffered another shattering naval defeat, a defeat which assured the success of the invasions of both Biak and the Marianas.
The climactic air-naval Battle of Leyte Gulf virtually eliminated the Japanese Navy as a factor in the Pacific war.
