Kip Lindberg, curator of the Mine Creek Battlefield State Historical Site near Pleasanton, Kan., about 50 miles south of Olathe, is hoping that with some help from researchers and their sophisticated equipment at the University of Kansas, he'll learn more about the 1864 battle.
The Battle of Mine Creek is known for its fierce hand-to-hand combat.
"Mine Creek is easily the site of the largest battle of the War Between the States in Kansas -- soldiers from at least eight states fought along the banks of Mine Creek," said John Spencer, director of the Mine Creek Battlefield Foundation.

Although the weather was clear on the day of the battle one might expect that the foliage seen in these photos was similar to that at the time of the engagement.
Completed in 1998, the Mine Creek Visitor Center helps preserve for history this often overlooked battle which is actually one of the largest cavalry engagements of the Civil War as well as a battle remembered for it's intense hand to hand combat.

Battle on the Bay is one of the best of the “city at war” sub-genre of Civil War history books that have become increasingly popular in recent times.
On the negative side, the naval battles have no accompanying maps, making it a little difficult to follow the action at times, and there was no list of military units stationed in and around the city during the war.
The battle at Marshall, the raid’s most significant fight, was described by the author in detail, though a map would have been helpful to readers unfamiliar with the area.

The nonprofit Mine Creek Battlefield Foundation learned in May that its $750,000 project was approved for TEA-21 (Transportation Enhancement Act) funding to buy 520 acres at Mine Creek.
It was at Mine Creek on Oct. 25, 1864, during his retreat following a defeat at Westport, Mo., that Confederate commander Sterling Price came a cropper while attempting to ford the stream.
Mine Creek is located off U.S. Route 69 about 65 miles south of Kansas City.

The battle of Mine Creek, fought on October 25, 1864, was one of several battles fought between C.S. General Sterling Price and an array of Union foes during Price's ill-fated Missouri and Kansas Campaign of 1864.
Reeling from his defeat at the Battle of Westport, in Missouri, General Price and his broken Army of Missouri began a retreat south to friendly Confederate lands when the Union cavalry, under the command of U.S. Colonels Frederick Benteen and John Philips, caught up with Price's lines on the north side of the Mine Creek.
The Battle of Mine Creek has also been called one of the shortest battles of the Civil War, lasting only 30 minutes.
