TERRE DI ARNOLFO: everything about Colle di Val d'Elsa, the Home of Lead-Glass Crystal
On 15 June 1269, the General Council of Florence, which held an urgent meeting at the news that Ghibelline forces were approaching Colle, ordered the men-in-arms of three city districts to stand ready "at lighted candle", in other words at dawn, ready to come to the aid of their ally, Colle.
The entire Sienese camp was destroyed, and their banners and those of the Germans were dragged in the dust, while Provenzano Salvani himself was caught and killed by a Sienese exile, Regolino Tolomei, and his head was cut off, stuck on a pike, and displayed atop the walls of Colle.
Thus ended the dominion of the Ghibellines, a dominion won after the battle of Montaperti, and the final dominion of the Guelfs of Florence began.

 Dante Alighieri : Dante
Dante pretended that his family descended from the ancient Romans (Inferno, XV, 76), but the earliest relative he can mention by name is Cacciaguida[?] degli Elisei (Paradiso, XV, 135), of no earlier than about 1100.
His father, Alighiero di Bellincione, was a White Guelf, but suffered no reprisals after the Ghibellines won the Battle of Montaperti[?], and this safety reveals a certain personal or family prestige.
Dante also found the time to be a soldier, and in 1289 fought in the battle of Campaldino[?] (June 11th), with Florentine knights against Arezzo, then in 1294 he was among those knights who escorted Carlo Martello[?] (son of Charles II d'Anjou and the hero of Poitiers) while in Florence.

 Dante Background
Florence was a city-state or commune with a Republican form of government for most of the second half of the thirteenth century until the fifteenth century.
Between the two republics were six years of anti-republican government, beginning with the Ghibelline defeat of the Florentine Guelfs in 1260 in the battle of Montaperti (see Inf.
X, 85-93), and ending with the defeat of the Ghibelline forces under Manfred, illegitimate son of the Emperor Frederick II, at the battle of Benevento in 1266, after which the Ghibellines were banished from Florence.
